Too bad about your Haut Brion. I bought mine from some guy named Rudy. It was excellent and unbelievably youthful-tasting.

Not surprised at this. We did a DDC tasting not so long ago, which showed the splendid terroir of the chateau. My problem is Dererencourt. The most affable of all the big consultants, but also the one who makes the most anonymous wines. I was dragged into a tasting of all his wines, and the DDC res...

Yeah, Tom, it looks like the relief is exaggerated somewhat. I noticed Lanessan on the fly in. Looks like they have their own little mound and even closer to the Gironde than Lagrange. I always wonder what really differentiates seemingly similarly situated properties. Meyney comes to mind farther no...

Not recently but I have mentioned once or twice that a 1968(?) Caves Velhas Garrafeira was really the first aged/mature wine that i ever had and it made a real impression on me about what a wine was supposed to become. There are some excellent red table wines in Portugal. It's not all about Port.

I remember talking to the Thiels at some UGC event maybe 10-15 years ago (no one else was hovering around them) and they were just the nicest people. Most of the other places didn't have the owners doing the pouring. I think the Thiels are out of the picture now. Believe Poujeaux was sold somewhere...

I've noted that same "ethereal" quality in the three budget 15s I've sampled: the Tour de Mons (Margaux), Vieux Robin (Medoc) and the "Kirkland" Pauillac. I'm chalking it up to a couple of factors, including alcohol somewhere in sweet spot between "normal" and "too...

The 2009 (then) Chateau Capbern Gasqueton is excellent. It was ~ $17. This was/is under the same ownership as Calon Segur, and is very close to Calon if not contiguous with it. What I find interesting is the high percentage of cabernet in the cepage, which in the 2009 was also something like 70%. Co...

Interesting. Off the top of my head I would side with Stefan over Arv here on the concept of the marginal utility of the nth bottle of the same wine, provided of course it is one that you really like. This is not to say I don't value "diversity" if I may use that term. I'm sure that econom...

Hmm. I have six out there in the wine cloud. The en primeur reviews ranged from full-bodied to vin de garde material. The couple of lower-level 15s I've tried have shared a certain ethereal lightness which I have attributed to ripe tannins and alcoholic lift. So, like the man says, "we'll see.&...

All I can say is the $10 2014 Ch. l'Argenteyre, Medoc (Costco) was great. Full bodied, dry, ripe. 50% cabernet. If this is exemplary, earnest 2014s should be way more than serviceable, and a place to look for relative bargains among the better-reputed names. I have a case of 2014 Cantemerle somewher...
