Re: It's been two years since I "met" Beaujolais...
I don’t try to age Beaujolais either, though I don’t worry about it fading away over 5-10 years either. I never feel guilty about pulling a bottle “too soon.”

Re: It's been two years since I "met" Beaujolais...
Stuart Pigott is English but lives in Germany and writes about German wines. James Suckling employs him to make travels to Beaujolais and write about wines. He is very fond of Mee Godard's wines and loves Jean-Marc Burgaud's Yes, 95p and up. It's funny how few wine critics find the time to learn to...

Re: The 2005 Vintage -- how good is it really?
I’ll pile on to say I’ve been enjoying the ‘05s and agree with Mark about them starting to show well. I think they are still on the upswing. Some I’ve been afraid to open. I get the willies every time I eye Angelus or Pavie, fearful that they may bludgeon me to death with over-ripe fruit and bury me...

>> I drank through a whole case of the ‘14 already. >> Gosh, I rarely drink Sociando that is less than 10 years old, and it is usually better at 20. Is the 2014 that much different from the usual Sociando? Very approachable but of course no aged complexity. These were just so easy to drink when I d...

Quite a string of outstanding wines Izak! Thanks for the report. I’ll have to search for some of these. I’ve had the Coudert Clos de Roillette thanks to Joel and agree it’s excellent. Odd discordance between you and Piggott on those two wines. I’ve heard the name but am not familiar with his writing...

2016 👍👍👍 I agree Nic. I think I prefer the 2016 for the long term and the 2014 for right now. Geez, I drank through a whole case of the ‘14 already. But it’s early days. The 2016 is riper and less “light on its feet” than the more typically Sociando 2014. I think that gives the ‘16 more long-term p...

Great choice Jim and I agree Joel. I've already Howed a whole case of 2014 Sociando over the course of a year. I was late to the game and paid $40. I see it's now at $43.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Patrick your note prompted me to check WS again for 2014 Leoville Barton, something I’ve been intermittently looking for. Anyone in the Baltimore/DC area interested in splitting a case? I might be interested in doing so. Definitely up for at least 3-4 bottles if anyone wants to be a third. I went a...

Just noodling, not asking…
Patrick, I concur those are the likely top contenders. I’d lean towards Sociando and a recent vintage, 2018, 19, or 20. Second guess would be Cantemerle ‘cuz the other one is The Wine That Shall Not Be Named (TWTSNBN). Whaddaya think?

So red, French, Medoc. Yet to be clarified whether “Medoc” refers to the entire region encompassing N. and S. Medoc and whether it includes the more specifically named communes or if it means only those properties outside of them. We’ve ruled out Pauillac, St Estephe, and Margaux and are waiting on ...

Re: Caymus 40th Anniversary 2012
If more oak, more extraction, more ripeness, more everything is what Caymus was going for with the Special Selection back in the late ‘90s, I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that a bottle of the regular cuvée was more enjoyable.

Re: Caymus 40th Anniversary 2012
I thought the 1994 Caymus Special Selection was grossly overoaked, with pronounced dill and vanilla notes. That was more of a turnoff than the ripeness of the fruit, and was the end of it for Caymus and me.

Re: President Trump
Patrick, I think tensions will be highest and the risk of violence greatest between the time of the election and swearing in, and also around the time of the initial verdict if there is a conviction. Tensions will likely diffuse if there are appeals as they wear on. I’m not sure how widespread viole...

Tim I do remain concerned about scattered violence if Trump is convicted or if he is the Republican nominee and loses. I didn’t mean to downplay that. But I don’t think we’ll face as organized an attempt to take over the government. Or if we do we’ll be better prepared. The outcome I fear most is th...

Failure to succeed in a criminal enterprise is not grounds for acquittal. My well-researched legal opinion is based on watching all 488 original Law and Order episodes plus the TV film. I tend to drink the same whites in summer as in winter, but more of them. Rieslings, white Burgs and Chardonnays, Champagne, Loire Chenin Blancs. I used to drink "lighter" whites as an outdoor summer sipper, but as I've gotten older and less tolerant of alcohol I've mostly cut that out or ...

LOL Alex, it is all about perspective. We ordered a 2016 Produttori (the regular Barbaresco) at a local restaurant earlier this week. The 20-something server came out to present the bottle and commented that it was “a really old wine.” BTW, it was delicious with about an hour of air. We had a 1947 B...

That's good news about Fevre. They had been my "affordable" go-to premium Chablis producer with Dauvissat and Raveneau simply too costly to justify. I'll put them back on my radar. Montee de Tonnerre and Bougros seemed to be the sweet spot for QPR back then, with Les Clos, Les Preuses, Val...
