Re: Chamber of horrors - the sequel: 2003s revisited

Yeah, no matter how much I’ve been trying to rationalize the 2003 Pontet Canet the past decade or so, it basically sucks. Man, it was thrilling upon release though. Couldn't agree more. I was surprised how much I liked the 2003 Pontet Canet in its youth, but more recent showings have had a giant ho...

About 25 years ago my Mom, a former lab scientist, looked at a decanter of mine and told me that I should just use Erlenmeyer flasks and bought me a few 2L ones.

They work perfectly. Easy to pour from, the right shape, easy to clean, and cheap.

2002 Haut Brion

Hitting on all cylinders. It has a strong smoky note that works really well. Lively red fruit and strong tannins that are maturing, grippy but not drying. Long finish. This has the structure to keep aging but I’d drink sooner rather than later to capture the fruit. 2002s taste like Bordeaux. Haut Br...

I had access to a number of bottles from a great cellar at my wine storage a couple of years ago. The provenance and showing of those bottles has been fantastic. Dinner with Blanquito

Blanquito was in town with some of his Denver wine buddies for the UGC tasting. We went to Delfina for an excellent meal and had some decent wine too. We started with a 2010 Gravner Brianco Breg from the list. A crazy aged orange wine that was really good. A description pulled from the Interweb: Gra...

To answer in the spirit of the question (I think) and in no order:

Chasse Spleen
Cantemerle
Sociando Mallet
Lynch Bages
Pontet Canet
Pichon Baron
Branaire Ducru
Canon La Gaffeliere
La Tour Blanche
Rieussec

Super hard to do for all the reasons Blanquito and others have already chimed in with

I am clearly in the minority. I don't understand young Bordeaux and I can't predict its evolution this early. Opening top Bordeaux on arrival is such a complete waste for me.

Re: 80's Bordeaux and retirement

I think the LLC "problem" is the same as Latour. It takes decades to drink well, especially in great vintages. I had the opportunity to drink a lot of LLC in the late 90s and it often didn't show well because I was drinking vintages from the 80s at that point. I always have liked 1983 a lo...

While I would call Haut Brion my favorite First Growth, Latour would certainly be my second. My ordering: 1. Haut Brion 2. Latour 3. Lafite 4. Margaux 5. Mouton As I mentioned in the Latour thread, I think a core part of the Latour "problem" is that it takes decades to mature and most of t...

Re: Latour, Latour, Latour

I think the "problem" with Latour is how long it takes to come around, even compared with other first growths. The youngest Latour I've ever had that I thought was fully mature was a 1955. That doesn't mean it can't drink well sooner. Latour is easily my favorite 2002 I've tried and was dr...

Re: Latour, Latour, Latour

Wow. 1928 Latour. I haven't had many 1928s but those few I have tried I have loved. Huge tannins that seem to have taken a minimum of 50 years to come around. Much as I love 1964s, I have to agree on 1964 Latour. They picked before the rain, but it isn't a spectacularly good wine. I remember having ...

This is a perfect question for me. I just drank my last bottle of 2000 Chasse Spleen, and I drank my last bottle of 2000 Cantemerle a year or two ago. I was thinking about reloading, but I don't think I'd pay over $50 in large part because I paid so little originally. I suspect the market price is m...

Re: Which producer was your gateway into the perils of red burgundy?

I didn't have a single gateway event, so hard to say. The first producer from whom I had a lot of great Burgundy was probably Lamarche. I'm still a big fan of the 1993 Lamarche La Grand Rue. For understanding the true heights of Burgundy, I'd say Mugnier. A 2002 Les Fuees in 2006 or 20007 was game-c...

I just try to keep consumption above purchases. I stopped buying Bordeaux with the 2009 vintage and can't afford age worthy Burgundy anymore, so the goal is to drink the good stuff I bought 15-20 years ago and slowly reduce the cellar.

I picked the 1986 Talbot because it was one of my early epiphany wines in the mid 90s and has always been a wine near and dear to me. I always enjoy it and it feels like its "mine" - not quite like how 1989 Lynch Bages is JimHow, but to a degree.
