Re: 2005 La Conseillante

I’m a huge Conseillante fan and I think 2005 is the best Conseillante ever (although I haven’t tasted 2016 and after). Unfortunately though I have only two bottles of it and prices are getting prohibitively expensive. I am long on 2000, 2001, 2009, 2010, and 2014 instead…

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?

I do think Bordeaux often gains "precision" with age, but I don't think my dislike of the 2015 was based on how young it was. At the Conseillante vertical in I think 2018 I liked the recently bottled 2015 so much I went home and bought a few bottles.

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?

For me precision is a combination of structure and flavor. Comparing the 2009 and 2018, with the 2009 the structure allowed each flavor and nuance to come through clearly while with 2018 it was muddied, everything coming together into an and anonymous single note. It is often, but not always, a pro...

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?

I think most critics consider the wines being made today are better than the same wines thirty years ago. For the most part they are undoubtedly cleaner, the selection is more careful, and there is plenty of new technology around. The problem for me is that the wines tend to be riper, more alcoholi...

Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?

Went to a sort of abbreviated Figeac vertical tasting last night, in large part to support Panos Kakaviatos who is a great presence in the DC wine community. Normally I'd be all over a Figeac vertical regardless, but the producer was remarkably uncooperative with this event -- they supplied only six...

I have several bottles of the 2004 of this. It has an appealing classical almost sourness to it, quietly substantial. Lacks an extra level to to be a great wine but a good wine in a style seemingly no longer made I wonder how long the 04 will last, when I last had it in 2019 I think it didn’t seem t...

Define BEST wine. There is where the story begins. I think your socialization to wine determines your attitude towards it. Evolution does not necessarily mean improvement. And yes, wines from the 80s and 90s that were good no longer have to be. We have to accept that today's wine production is diff...

I wasn’t too disturbed by the Murdaugh verdict from what little I know of it. But I was disturbed by that Alaska verdict. If there was ever a case of reasonable doubt that would seem to be it. It just seems like the evidence did not admit of anything even vaguely approaching certainty in that case. ...

Not sure how it is in the UK but in the U.S you can still get the 2016 Montrose for $200 and the 2020 is about $185.
