Re: My new wine obsession: Sauternes

Sauterne / Barsac is always a guaranteed turn-on for non wine-folk dinner guests, as well. Non-wine drinkers are usually polite and appreciative of the reds, but when we pour the sticky... they always rave, especially when served with a fresh baked chocolate something. These are wonderful, hearty wi...

Same here. My last hurrah with 1st Growths was 2002 at $90. a pop. They are now too expensive for wines bottled in the several dozens of thousands per year.

Re: Chateau Lafite Rothschild - 1999 Bust

I hope you're all correct on both accounts because the NYT is way too left for me these days, and I still have four bottles of ' 99 Lafite remaining in the cellar. Maybe it was mildly corked, and those two hefty single malts had blunted my taste buds. We subscribe only to the Sunday Times edition. S...

Chateau Lafite Rothschild - 1999 Bust

This was a staggering disappointment because I had last drunk ' 99 Lafite a couple of years ago when the wine offered lead pencil, with precise, though still primary fruit. Last night's bottle was way off, not corked or cooked, but flat and muted without any 1st Growth persona whatsoever. Could this...

The U.S. Dollar has been steadily weaker... again. This may account for the price creep of the rarest chateaux.

RDD, I have found that the 1999 right bankers (BP, Pavie & Troplong Mondot) are more attractive than the lefties; Lynch Bages, Leo. Barton, and some others. Mouton, however, has very good potential with time.

' 99 Le Bon Pasteur - Pomerol

My last bottle from the case, because they drank very well from release and this wine has never shut down. Medium ruby with a plump, plummy nose. This surprisingly un-Rolland-like medium weight Pomerol offers a more classic leanness, with good precision and purity. Nice flavors of dark cherry and va...

Carruades de Lafite has become fodder for fraud and deception in asia because it is often sold in restaurants there as 'Chateau Lafite Rothschild' to the uninformed newly wealthy. This is really a shame because Carruades is generally just a mediocre wine, at best. Hence, those who pay the royal pric...

Elmo, I have not tried the 2000 vintage, but for what it's worth I recently poured two bottles of the 1990 down the drain.
This was not from my cellar, but from a cousin's in Connecticut, so the pre-cellaring storage may have been problematic.
I would definitely uncork one now to check.

Sushi is a favorite for me, and I always take it with sake. The cheapest sake is too rough and petroleum-flavored, so I buy the $15.00 bottle at the NH stores.
