Re: President Trump

On NPR this morning, it stated that the new WHO estimate of the COVID-19 is 3.4%!!!! Can this be right? I listened to the segment twice to make sure I heard it correctly. Last I’d been hearing was less than 1%. If true and accurate, this is an enormous change. 0.7% is seven times more deadly than in...

I think people trying to minimize this are way off -- there seems to be a strong component of wishful thinking involved. The best estimate for what we are dealing with is something at least as transmissible as the common cold and 20x more fatal than the flu. Further, the 10-20% of cases that have s...

I thing I always find so interesting is how polarized the camps are on this topic. The pro old camp often points to the sini...

I recall a thread we had on BWE a while ago on Sociando where Leve was critical of their high yields in particular and early pick dates. I missed that thread on Chinon and Kissak. Re: Have there been good Bordeaux made since the 80s?

A good example is what I regard as the benchmark Bordeaux Chateau, which I own more of than any other: Leoville Barton. The Leoville Bartons from the 1980s are very good, especially 1985, 1988 and 1989. But the Leoville Bartons from 2000 onwards are unquestionably better in my opinion, even if they...

Re: Have there been good Bordeaux made since the 80s?

Part of my attachment to 80’s era bordeaux is I love some rusticity in my wines as long as it comes with enough fruit and depth. And that is what the 80’s delivered in spades. Wines from that era are plenty ripe but come with loads of character and complexity. Many of the things that add character a...

Bold Statement #276: In general and overall, I've never had a Bordeaux post-1990 that was as good as the Bordeaux from 1990 and earlier. Re: Have there been good Bordeaux made since the 80s?

I’ve been thinking this very thing for years. Even the top 86s tasted great by 2008 and were in the zone. Either the 95s and 96s need even more time than the big, hard, tannic 86s did — a real possibility, I think/hope — or the 80’d magic was lost even by then.

I love fully mature, old wines. The 1966 Haut Bailly that Chris B. brought to Denver 2019 was one of my top wines of the whole weekend, as well as CabFan's incredible 1958 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon and 1961 Gordiano Barolo. Alright, I’ll play. The 02 LB is better than the 96, high praise indeed. The 02 is a more pleasurable and complete wine.

I can’t promise I’ll feel the way in 10 years or so, but who wants to wait that long?

I think some of the 1990 Bordeaux are at peak or approaching peak and I have had a few that were past peak. Most of the best 1989 red Bordeaux, although wonderful now, will be better in the future (like maybe 5 to 10 years). Just my opinion - feel free to disagree. Chris Bublitz I concur completely...

Bold statement of the day: either the 96 needs more time, or the 02 is clearly the superior wine. Per usual, I’m in the former camp (though I think overall the 96 and 02 are similar in quality, once the 96 fully blossoms).

I got my 2002 L Barton at Table and Vine in 2005, so they were stored properly. If I only had two bottles though, Marcus, I’d probably wait a few more years at least. I froze the 2nd half of the bottle on day one, and thawed the remains tonight. Wow, this is even better than the first go. I had 6-7 bottles of the 82 Lagune over a period from 2008-2012, and they were uniformly outstanding and seemingly at their apogee. Then a la the 82 Pichon Lalande, they entered what seemed to be their decline phase and I stopped looking for them at auction. That and the fact that finding an 82 Lagu...
