Re: I'm done buying wine for a year. Who is with me?
The BIG DAY approaches. I'm already getting the shakes.
I meant to load up this month, but somehow I've *only* added 20 bottles to the cellar to tide me over during the big freeze.
Anyone else getting edgy?

Re: Xmas 2019
Very nice, Bill. I’m glad you enjoyed the bubbly.
It looks like you had a higher priced bottling of the Bonville than the one I had (which was the standard 2012 Millesime at $40, now sold out: https://m.klwines.com/p/i?i=1302045). I’ve been wanting to try the fancier cuvees from Bonville.

Man, the 82, 83, 85, 86 and 89 Meyney are/were all outstanding. I think I’ve liked the 86 the best, but I’ve enjoyed them all immensely.
I’ve probably consumed more bottles of the 89 Meyney (which my first case purchase) than any other single wine.

My top 5 QPR in Bordeaux: 1. Sociando 2. Cantemerle 3. du Tertre 4. La Lagune (would be higher if cheaper) 5. Re: A few musings about Spanish wines
Alion made some fantastic wines in the early 90's....the last bottle i consumed of the 2001 was still very good...now that i think about i really don't have any Spanish wines younger than the 2001 vintage Totally agree. We did an Alion vertical, I think the 94 or 95 was the top performer, and they ...

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I know nothing about 78 Mont Redon, but I do know that Gilman's drinking windows occasionally extend 10-20 or more years beyond my end dates. If that note was recent, I’d lend it more credence than a release note. Good point— his note appears to be from 4/2011. Neither recent nor old, really. But 9...

Re: A few musings about Spanish wines
Guys I think that for the most part, Spanish wines have never been better... At the top level at least, I couldn’t disagree more: Marquez de Murrieta, Muga, CVNE, Pesquera and even many wines made by Vega Sicilia like Alion and Valbuena are modernist shadows of their former glory. I think only Lope...

78 Mont Redon is risky. I used to drink a bit of Mont Redon CDP as it was an affordable CDP. Was really never impressed with any of them but but they were good value. No doubt. But the bottles look utterly pristine (https://cdn.klwines.com/Auction/UploadedImages/15016692/228107/30983613218667135064...

Re: Looking for red burgs: Robert Chevillon any good?
I know so little about red burgundy. But John Gilman — whom I think of as having a very traditionally centered palate — is a huge fan of Chevillon’s reds. That and the fact that a bunch of these from 2011 and 2013 were going for ~$50 a pop at auction made me interested. This thread may have caused a...

But if I can go a WHOLE YEAR (starting January 1st, mind you) buying only one mixed case + some 1971s and 1980s birthyears, virtually nothing I do this December can obviate the great victory in the war against buying wine we don’t need that will...

Chris B’s bottle of the 1990 Figeac blew me away this year.
We of course had an absurd number of amazing wines at BWE Denver.
For a young Bordeaux, I’d consider the 2016 Pichon Baron or 2014 Leoville Barton

The 1996 du Tertre is also drinking really well these days, and can be found at auction $40-$50. I might like it a bit more than the 2000.
But the 2000 and the 1996 especially are in a different style than the 2015 and 2016, which are smoother and richer.

The 2016 thread made me reach for a half bottle of the 15 du Tertre. This really should come with a warning for Jim: WARNING, if you own any of this, don’t open or it will all be gone in a week! I have a probably contentious thought/observation: I’ve found many* 2015 Bordeaux more ‘exciting’ than their 2016 counterparts. I am pretty sure that 2016 overall is a better year than 2015 for my palate, but for drinking young, 2015 has been more fun, interesting and head-turning that the 16s. For ...
