Re: Is 2000 the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever?

I think 2005 is the better vintage. More balanced and more powerfull than 2000, but also a lot more difficult to understand. 2005 will take longer to evolve and hold up longer than 2000. 2000 is just starting to reveal itself, it will get better for sure. I think 2000 was breakthrough in the sense t...

Re: TN: Haut Brion 2006

Thanks a lot. Yes indeed the prices come down quite nicely. On the other hand, how do you think about buying pape clement, which is close in quality and tastes ? I remember dark choclate and wild rosemary probably even more powerfull than the Haut Brion but less elegant.

TN: Haut Brion 2006

Color: Dark, almost Black. Complex Nose cassis, barique and herbs. It seems to display an other taste on each inch on the tongue. Very complex, very aromatic.
Cassis, Cocos , chocolate, herbs. Minerality is there as well. Delicate but also powerfull. Great Haut Brion. Rating: 96

Re: wine of the year ideas

On 2004 best value? Some ideas from a blind tasting 2007. The only premier Cru missing was Lafite, competition was tough. On top was Domaine de Chevalier. Elegant as always, but more powerful than ever. Red Cherries and velvet. Unbelievable value.I recently retasted this wine and it is shut down now...

Re: TN: WTN: 1994 Angelus

I had the Angelus 1994 right after the Latour 1983. The Anglus 1994 is excellent, but the comparison was not fair. ;) The Latour 1983 is a monster.

Re: WSJ critics are thumbs down on 2006 first growths

The 1 growth prices have no logic anway. Why on earth would I buy a 2006 Latour for $780 when I can buy the 1983 for $300? And the 1983 is a tremendous wine, not even yet on his peak. This, being in the mid 40, will I live long enough to trink the 2006 Latour on its peak? Let the russian and chinese...

TN: Cantemerle 1989 Haut Medoc

Color dark garnet red, orange rim, but still massive, dark core. Smell acacia flowers, vanille, honey.Taste of very ripe Merlot. Notes of chocolate and honey. The fruit is barely recogniseable, some cassis. Strong body, you almost do not believe the 12,5% alcohol. A bit short, though. If there were s...

Dark garnet red color, black reflections. Dramatic Nose: black cherries and cinnamon. Strong body. The first sip was suberb. Dark cherries, dried plums, cinnamon, smoke, Very much Pessac. Still very tannic, which deminishes the pleasure, Currently this wine is about 91 points. My bet is this wine wi...

Re: TN: Gaffeliere 1982 St. Emillon

Hi Stefan, When I look at your Note of the 1970 Gaffeliere I am tempted to agree the 1982 will last longer than 5 years. There seems to be some similarities. ;) Honestly I can not tell how much longer it will hold up. It seems prefectly ready to trink right now. When I consider it I payed aproximate...

Ruby red color with orange rim. Significant signs of maturity, but still brilliant. Destinctive nose, manely red cherries. Soft resolved tanins, velvety, but not tired yet. Stilly good sweet fruit, red cherries and strawberry. Classic claret, trinks very nicely now and will hold up an other 5 years ...

Re: TN: A Cheval Blanc lookalike(?) from Hungary

Hi Bill, I believe you. I never had the 2000, but I have the 2002 which doubled in price due to the fact that all cheap sources are sold out. In fact, Petite Gravet Aine seems to sell out very quickly. I think this is quite a vote from the buyer:)

Re: TN: A Cheval Blanc lookalike(?) from Hungary

The Loire has nice Cabernet Franc dominated wines as well. I tried the 2006 Anjou Villages Brissac AOC Domaine de Montgilet. Pretty nice wine, not as powerfull as a Bordeaux, but nice with a meal. I rate it about 86-88.it is around 13$. Of course there is also Petit Gravet Aine, which got more CF th...

Re: A 1997 which punches like a heavyweight

I bought a case Poujeaux 97. It is a great classic and I consider it still early drinking. The 97 Sociando has expressive peculiar aromatics - herbs like thyme - is also early trinking and goes well with the right kind of food. One other heavyweight 97 is Pavie Decesse, so tannic that I wonder if it...

Re: TN: 2006 Château Haut-Bailly (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan)

I also bought the 2002 and still like it. It seems the 2002 was different. I talked to a lady from the H.B. team on a tasting and she said the 02 was straight versus subtle, refined as they normally do it. I wonder about the 06, very fine but there does not seem to be much going on. After a while I ...

Re: TN: Some 2006 Bordeaux

Yes, I bought a case myself. I love complex aroma more than strengh. My feeling is, that as fruity the wine would be currently, it got still many subtle aspect that will develop with age. I remember the 2004 improved substancially. I blindtasted it alongside with some big names (Angelus, Figeac). In...

TN: Cheval Blanc 1988

Ruby red color, orange edges, clear signs of maturity. Saddle leather, barn in the nose, slowly diminishing but does not completely go away. In the mouth soft and redefined, still noticeable tanin, needs some air. Develops in the glass. Medium body, strong balance. Smoke, cassis, saddle leather. Las...
