It is right near 6th Floor museum, and Nasher Sculpture, and Crow Asian Arts museum, so you can do more than 1 in a day.

You clearly need a car. Cabs would be cost prohibitive as driving distances between sites of interest can be huge. Many hotels, especially outside of downtown, have free parking.
And there is not any compelling reason to stay downtown.
