Re: I am calling for a boycott of the 2010 Bordeaux vintage.

Jim -- yes, I think it would be merited for GPL... Jon -- it's all relative and a question of personal taste and comfort level. I'm as dismayed and angry about the out-of-control price increases as anyone, but to me, looking at other comparable bordeaux from the past 5 vintages, as well as Cal cab b...

Re: I am calling for a boycott of the 2010 Bordeaux vintage.

The only intriguing higher-priced 2010 so far to me has been Grand Puy Lacoste at $90, which Neil Martin describes as virtually perfect (97-99 pts) and scores higher than Latour, Lafite, Haut Brion, Pontet Canet, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande, Lynch Bages, Ducru, Barton, Poyferre, LLC, Palmer, Cos, M...

Re: Is 2009 a "bargain"?

Obviously it's all relative. I spent $250 (face value) plus a ridiculous "service" fee each for two tickets to Buffalo Springfield last weekend. It was a really cool show (also love Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, who opened for them) but was it "worth" $550 for two tickets...? ...

Re: Is 2009 a "bargain"?

I bought about a dozen cases of 09s early on -- Duhart, Tertre Roteboeuf, Poyferre, Pavie Macquin, Clinet, Pontet Canet, Beausejour Duffau and Malescot -- and I'm sure I'll buy a quite a few additional cases of less expensive 09s down the road, particularly after trying them at next January's UGC ta...

Still 09 was TOO expensive.[/url]
Was just offered '10 Malescot for $109USD... 09 was pricier than I had hoped but I bought some @ 85/btl.

Re: I am calling for a boycott of the 2010 Bordeaux vintage.

I'm at that age now where it is becoming borderline as to whether it makes sense to continue to buy new vintages. From what's been written about the 2010 vintage, this is particularly an issue. I bought some 09 futures but will buy few if any 2010s. The likely aging pattern of the latter vintage ma...

Re: Pontet Canet 2010....

I just bought some more 01, 02 and 03s for a fraction of that. If you taste these Friday as you'd mentioned in your 02 PC thread, I'll be very interested to hear your impressions. I've thought about buying a bit more '03, though the cheapest price in the States seems to be $85-90 USD. Bought 6 more...

Re: Pontet Canet 2010....

Ridge Monte Bello is a touchstone of sorts for me -- when any cab-based or bordeaux blend wine drifts too far north of the $100 give or take that I'd spend to add another great bottle of Monte Bello to my cellar (just bought some more 07, which is fantastic), I start losing interest. I did buy a bun...

Re: Pontet Canet 2010....

Sad, I bought (with some hesitation/dismay as prices rose) through 2009 @ $110/btl, but this is crazy. Will look to pick up a few more bottles, if I can find the right price (which will probably now escalate...), of 08, 03, 04, 02 and 07, but otherwise I'm done buying PC :(

Re: T/N 2002 Ch Pontet Canet

We had it with Alfred Tesseron himself in our verticle of Pontet-Canets in NYC. It got a little lost in the shuffle that night but on its own it is a very enjoyable wine, for my taste. Had a similar experience at a very enjoyable P-C dinner with Tesseron in Los Angeles last November. '94, '96, and ...

Re: Do you have a bottle you just CAN'T bring yourself to open?

My last bottle of 1990 Angelus. It was the first really great bottle of bordeaux my now-wife and I shared together shortly after we met in 2002. We'll open it at some point, but I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger... Waiting for that perfect moment/occasion, though we should probably just ope...

Re: Pavie: once again controversial

Gilman clearly wants attention, and he's getting it! When you're not exactly a household name, it helps to get written up in the Times and elsewhere as being in some sort of "controversy" with Parker. I've read John's 2010 Bordeaux reviews in WOFW, and in general he's an interesting, enter...
