Re: So what have you bought lately?

Thanks, Jim and yes will be interesting to see how it stacks up, but I won't be touching this for quite some time. I've tended to enjoy the 09s so far over the 10s, but Pichon is an estate I need more of in my cellar.
Cheers.

1 x Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2010.
$483 (NZ) but fortunately it cost me nothing as I was able to use a reward scheme.

Thanks for the notes, Mark. I haven't had a D''Arenberg in years (last one was a Dead Arm I think). I meet the winemaker at a tasting in London once. Chester I think his name was, nice guy and pretty flamboyant - had his own line in clothes.

My 14-year-old daughter loves it. I tell her to take note of the culture etc as she is destined to marry the son of a wealthy Chateau owner in Bordeaux one day. She doesn't seem that keen on the idea, but I'll give it time..

Not a band final. Not as good as Istanbul 2005 ... :D

Seriously, was a great WC and an epic final to cap it off. Got to be pleased to see Messi finally lift the trophy he most coveted.

Going to be a great final. I'm sticking with Argentina to win it (their name seems to be written on the trophy) but wouldn't be disappointed to see France win it either.

Jacques - would be great to see Konate get a spot in the final starting lineup.

Re: Best QPR in the 1855 classification

I'm a fan of St Pierre. It's a style of Bordeaux that I really like and is reasonably priced given its quality. They are the factors I think of when thinking of QPRs.

"Profound"? Probably not, but the profound wines tend to come with a higher price tag unfortunately.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying it, Jim - I've been a fan for a while now.

That said, I did have a 2010 a few weeks ago which I didn't enjoy as much. The 09's were all incredible, however.

Good to see the US through, and well deserved.

The Dutch don't look that great (not a patch on the sides from the 70s) so you never know, another upset might be on the cards.

Been enjoying the WC so far. Lots of upsets, good footie and the knockout stage to come.

Re: Château La Tour de Bessan, a Margaux worth discovering

Thanks for the information on this estate, AlexR - very interesting. I popped open a 2015 last night. Think I preferred this more upon release. Nice Margaux profile however, violets, cherries, soft tannins, light to medium bodied. Just lacked a bit of structure and complexity. Enjoyable nonetheless,...

Opened my last bottle of Giscours 2003 this weekend. Beautiful floral nose, vanilla initially - distinctive cedar and leather as it opened up further. Full bodied, stewed plums but finishes a little port like, burnt, sharp. Day 2 and this has settled down for the better, much more integrated. Much m...

Recently? The most recent was a 14 which I thought was beautiful. An 09 & 10 also, a 16 (at a tasting) and also not so long ago a 2003 which I liked (despite the vintage.). In fact, I think I’ve got one more 03 left which I need to pop open.

Agree with this, but would challenge the assessment of Giscours.

For me it was a difficult choice between "Stefans supermarket swill" and Giscours. La Lagune only narrowly pipped it as it is the less expensive of the two.

2010 Château Haut-Beychevelle Gloria (the same owners as St Pierre & Gloria I believe). Still dense, thick and somewhat brooding. This is a big, tannic wine that may have benefited from more time in the cellar. Alas, my last bottle. Blackcurrants, and chocolate, earthy and meaty. Mocha on the no...
