Re: Report on 2022 vintage and tasting notes from Jane Anson is out
Styles does go on a bit. But he’s asking a legitimate question: were the wines acidified? My guess is that it’s exceedingly difficult or impossible to tell if a wine has had tartaric acid additions by tasting barrel samplings. More importantly, if the wines’ pHs were adjusted by adding acid, how wou...

Probably splitting hairs given how outstanding these all were. I’m interested in your thought process. I noticed that you scored t...

Re: GPL is [no longer] my largest BDX holding!
Have you long been a Haut Bailly fan, DG? It seemed like an under the radar chateau until kinda recently, despite making consistently great wines since the 60’s or longer. The 79 is one of those largely unheralded gems. Bruce Bassin turned me on to Haut Bailly shortly before he died in 1998. I boug...

You guys both nailed it. Guigal’s La-Las are really special, but lose their specialness if drunk too often. Hardly much risk of that at today’s prices.

Re: Cheval Blanc paves the way for 22 en primeur sales
I get unreasonably emotional about Bordeaux, but feel no sentimental attachment to futures per se. When it was a good deal financially I bought most of my Bordeaux en primeur. That ended a long time ago, with 2019s as the sole exception. That doesn’t mean we should stop talking about the wines, even...

I would luv your thoughts on that '96 Joel..I have one resting I have one bottle each of 1996 Montrose, 1996 Ducru, 1996 Las Cases. The only bottle I've had was the Ducru about 4 years ago and it was still pretty tight and structured but accessible with a lot of air. Which one do BWE'ers think I sh...

RIP Gordon Lightfoot. I enjoyed his music. We had a med school housemate named Ed FitzGibbon who played piano. The 4 or 5 of us would do sing-alongs and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was a favorite, especially after successful parties. Of course we re-christened it The Wreck of the Edmund FitzG...

Re: Wally's 2019 Finally Delivered
I don’t think it’s fair to paint all retailers dealing in Bdx futures with the scam brush. The system sucked the financial advantage out of futures years ago (2019 being an exception). But most selling futures do deliver. The bigger problem is spotting the dodgy dealers. Those that go bad slowly can...

Chris, CT tells me I have 4.85 bottles of the 11 left that are ready to drink. I guess based on the hive estimate of the drinking window.

Another excellent bottle of this. Dark red, nose opens in 30-45 minutes with nice ripe cherry and cassis, moist earth and tobacco. Medium body, really well balanced. Beginning complexity. Medium finish. Nothing sticks out but neither is it too slick or glossy. 13% alcohol for those who care. Very cl...

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?
For me precision is a combination of structure and flavor. Comparing the 2009 and 2018, with the 2009 the structure allowed each flavor and nuance to come through clearly while with 2018 it was muddied, everything coming together into an and anonymous single note. It is often, but not always, a pro...

Prices listed in pending auctions mean nothing to me. All I know is my own experience trying to buy 1989 Lynch these days, try to realistically buy it for under $500. The 89/90 Lynch lot means nothing to me. 1990 is not 1989. Adding 1990 to 1989 diminishes the value of 1989, what is the strategy be...

Wine Searcher listings show Lynch Bages available at retail for $390 and on up right now in the US, and that’s without a Pro subscription. Who would have thought Blanquito’s palate would align with the critics at WE? I suspect you can find a pro to agree with a variety of different preferences if you look long enough. Well, my first bottle of this was a big disappointment. Modern, a little too ripe and low acid, not much energy, and not very Bordeaux-like. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t live up to the hype here. It paled in comparison to a 2005 Talbot (admittedly a better/costlier wine) from the day before that we w...

I wasn’t too disturbed by the Murdaugh verdict from what little I know of it. But I was disturbed by that Alaska verdict. If there was ever a case of reasonable doubt that would seem to be it. It just seems like the evidence did not admit of anything even vaguely approaching certainty in that case....

Very nice report Izak.
Any info on whether any of the bottles from the 80s were from the TCA/B affected vintages, and whether they were reconditioned at the Chateau? You mention questionable provenance for the 1989 - was that one of the affected years?
