Re: Favorite New World wine(s)?

The epitome of Cali Cab is Shafer Hillside Select. Old or new it is wonderful. New World Chard? Peter Michael. Other varieties hold some interest, but these are the pillars. These scream New World-western hemisphere.

Re: March is "BWE Month."

I may be a little late to this party but I brought a few representative wines of a recent dinner. First is a 1998 Canon la Gaffliere. This was surprisingly the most closed of the three wines I’m posting about even after being decanted for an hour or two it really needed the whole evening to open up ...

Re: Your top underachiever wine

Just had it. 2000 Smith Haut Laffite. Never was great in prior vintages, but saw the 2000 at a good price. It screamed Graves style in nose and taste. Delish. Perhaps the beginning of the turn around.

Had 2008 Cristal Brut (wait 5+ years); 1990 La Mission Haut Brion (a great Grave/P-L); 1996 Alfred Merkelbach Urz Wurz Riesling Auslese (great wine from a tough vintage)

Re: President Trump

Jim, The Supreme Court gets all the press, but the Republicans held up Obama recs for the lower courts as well. Then they packed all of the courts, even with ABA unqualified people. Technically it was legal, but the scope was a slow moving legal coup of sorts. That was all McConnell's doing with big...

Re: President Trump

I usually don't comment on politics here. But I think that whether or not Trump loses is relatively immaterial to the Powers that Be in the GOP. Their goal all along was packing the courts at middling and upper levels and they have succeeded. Amy C-B is the cherry on top. Democrats have to grow a pa...

Re: Disappointment with certain wines

I am sorry a wine did not live up to your hopes. But I am leery when a wine which usually gets good reviews is reviewed less good by 1 experience. Have you had this wine before? was it the same or could that wine be heat damaged, etc.

1989 Ch Haut Brion- smooth, rich, brilliant (drank at 10 yo) 2000 Ch Margaux at the Chateau-first ever 100 point young red wine I've ever tasted 1990 Angelus-this wine was the best argument that Parker was right on with his Bordeaux reccs and my taste- ( but he did occasionally miss like with the 86...

Re: Zoom meeting tasting notes

Mike P-didn't get a chance to say Hey to U and H. I've always liked the 88 over its stable-mates 89/90 because of the better acidity. I found the next 2 "flabby"-perhaps a bit of a tough word to use as I like them all, but the 88 IMO have held up the best.

Re: Zoom meeting tasting notes

Comparing apples to horses. This Sauternes was very good, but I suspect there are better in my cellar-all from 2001. PM Chards are a dry option better with fish, cream sauces. My present favorites in the PM barn is Cuvee Indigene-more consistent year in/out. Point Rouge, the one we had in Bordeaux, ...

2001 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey Sauternes Gold color. Nose of sweet pear, vanilla, pineapple. Taste was a wonderful balance of sweet/acid/flavor. Delish, but for the 4 hours opened there was no noted change, suggesting it could go on many years. 95

What are the noble grapes?

I was invited to a white noble grape wine tasting. I figured everyone would be bringing Chardonnay and Riesling. In looking up what other grapes are "noble", I came across a mystery. Some sites list 6, some sites 7-8 some up to 20. Who decides this? And what does this learned group say?

Nice. Not surprised at the 89 Ducru showing as that was in the period that claimed no problem, only to change out the wood in the Chai a year later. TCA all over the place.
