Was outbid at the last minute on a 3 bottle lot of the 1990 Lagune. Fortunately someone saved me from buying that overrated, unworthy crap.

Great summary, Stu. My go-to in your #2 category is Malartic-Lagraviere (as Tom can attest), and DDC is my top Bordeaux Blanc as it is for many.

Re: Second wine conundrum
Price is certainly an issue with Bordeaux Blanc, many are too expensive compared to other great white wines, including the ones Nic lists. But in the sub-$50, there are some terrific Blanc from Bordeaux, especially Carbonnieux (which is more like $30-$35 these days). Of course, if you don’t like the...

I am a big fan of Bordeaux Blanc. My impression is that these wines are under-appreciated as a group (but not undervalued as they can be pricey), not sure why.

A lovely, pitch-perfect bottle of the 96 Sociando Mallet. I owe wines like this in my cellar all to BWE.

Coravin did little for me when I tried it. I noticed deterioration on old wines even after less than 24 hrs, and I don’t need a preservation system besides my freezer for younger wines.

1961 (at least) through 1989 was an utterly brilliant run at Canon. Of the wines I buy and drink (which includes everything except the Firsts, Palmer, LMHB, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, and a few ultra premium Pomerols), it’s a top 5 chateau for me in that era, maybe even a top 3.

Pure unadulterated St-Emilion is one of life’s great joys. When you go to the town itself it is overly quaint and full of tourists but on the town square in a touristy shop the quintessence of St-Emilion wine, a few years ago, the modest 2004 Couvent Des Jacobins made by nuns. No sexual immorality ...

The best second wine I’ve had was the 1990 Dame de Montrose. I liked the 89 Bahans and the 96 Reserve de la Comtesse a lot too, but overall most second wines have been a big letdown given the pricing.

Yes, Jeff’s site is an amazing resource and as I’ve said before, I find his notes usually quite clear about the style of a wine. And of course, Jeff is not alone in his preference for these wines.

Re: Saint Emilion style
St Emilion is dead to me. Orlando’s write up captures it perfectly. I get it that these modernized wines appeal to some palates, but I really cannot understand people like Jeff who have loved bordeaux for decades — and so by definition “got” the appeal of these wines pre-consultant — yet utterly emb...

I can’t help but romanticize Geyserville. As beautiful and ancient as the Lytton Springs vineyard is, Geyserville is all the more so. The ‘old patch’ in Geyserville is especially impressive with some 120+ year old vines and charming tree covered hillsides in the background.

The thing that really stood out t...

Yes indeedy, even I like Geyserville young. I also like it middle aged and old too. I’ve had a few vintages that did go through an awkward phase like 3-5 years after the vintage, but otherwise it tastes great pretty much all the time.

I finished up the last 1/3 of the 2011 Stony Hill chardonnay tonight, and I still liked it just as much as on day 1. In some respects, it’s the antithesis of the archetypal cali chard, lacking any buttery, rich, oily, coconutty flavors. It really is more like a brilliant Gruner Veltiner in many ways...

6 bottles of the 2014 Stony Hill Chardonnay for $42.45 per. Had the 2011 Stony Hill last night with the 82 Talbot, and it was pretty scintillating. Terrific bottle of the 1982 Talbot tonight. Sensational aromatics, silky resolved palate, bright and a touch lean on the finish. This does deepen with air but this is clearly is on the back slope of life. Nevertheless, still like a 94 or even a 95 pointer, as far as that goes.

The jury has spoken, but nobody should celebrate. No. We should. This really is a pivotal moment where a black man gets justice in our white-dominant society. Long over-due.
