I can only envie your prices Nic. Here in Nfld the '07 Ch. Kirwan will set you back $89.99!! These government monopolies have got to go. Usurious! I don't know about Quebec, but here the government uses the liquor stores as make work projects. They always have huge numbers of staff on the job. There...

TN: Pichon Lalande 2004

Popped and poured. I know '04 is supposed to be an off, er classical, year, but damn this is good. Really nice deep red to reddy purplish colour. The first thing to hit me on the nose is that pauillac gravel; smokey and flinty. This is followed by reddish black fruit (black cherries) and some vanill...

Almost opened the same 2006 Duhart that Jim's sipping on, but went with a Barbaresco Prunotto 2004 instead. Better with turkey. Merry Christmas everyone.

Re: Time for 2010 BWE Wine of the Year nominations.

I too like the idea of nominating Dom. Chevalier rouge -- always good, and usually fairly priced. If value is part of the equation, how about the '04 vintage. Up here in Canada the '04 is about 60% the price of the '06 (and 1/2 the price of the '05). -- An interesting side note: In comparing reviews...

Re: Three Bordeaux from last week and a superb Beaujolais

A timely review from my perspective. I was in the wine store a little earlier today to pick up a white for a pasta dinner when I noticed a number of bottles of both the '05 and '06 GR. I was in a hurry so didn't pick any up -- well, couldn't decide between the 2 vintages -- but I think I'll have to ...

Just wondering if anyone has tried the 2002 Brane Cantenac. I know where there's some available but am a little unsure about it. Chris Kissack over on the Wine Doctor site doesn't care for it very much, saying that it lacks impact "and class"!! But I also know that some on this site think ...

Re: Wine tasting descriptions

Maybe so JonoB, but although I used the '05 HB as my example, I find this sort of disparity to be quite widespread. And it's not just on matters of weight. Length of finish is another area where there can be incomprehensible disparity. Sticking with the example of the '05 HB, one contributor writes ...

A thought piece: Some of my drinking buddies complain about the ratings they find on CellarTracker. They have a difficult time understanding how some can rate a wine in the low 80s, while others will rate that same wine in the high 90s. I generally have no problem with this issue, and explain the di...

The Jets -- always almost there, but something not quite right. Great expectations then . . .. The pedigree suggests greatness, but then something . . . Well, that's the price in Newfoundland. I see Ontario has the '07 for $40! I haven't seen the '07 around here yet. And there's no '05 left, so I'm not sure what it went for. Ontario's pricing on bordeaux is typically about 15% better than it is here! The reason cited by the Newfoundland liquor corpo...

Well if I could get some up here I would. Sadly they're all sold out of the '03. I can only get 1999, 2004, and 2006. I already have a case of the '04 (and half a case of 2000). 2006 is really pricey (twice the '04), and '99 doesn't have that great a reputation, so I may wait until the '08s appear o...

Not legally, DavidG. The provinces are greedy so don't allow alcohol to cross provincial lines. If I were to buy from Ontario, that would cut into the profit that would otherwise go to Newfoundland -- at least I think that's the reasoning! It's certainly not a good situation for the consumer.

James who? :-) You're right about the attitude issues in wine. It seems to be the perennial (image) issue.
