Yes I remember. I found the old thread here: http://www.bordeauxwineenthusiasts.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4814&p=38184#p37513 It was Bistro Francais at 3124 M St NW. Unfortunately closed last year: https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/food/blog/20679071/bistro-francais-in-georgetown-will-close-...

Re: ***DC '18: March 22-25***

I know it was 2 DCs ago and that Jay found it, that’s why I’m having trouble remembering the place. (I had to drop out of the last DC convention as Peggy was having her total hip replacement.) Anyway, if it’s not the Maxime Bistro Francais linked above (the website pics look like the place I remembe...

Do you remember the name of that place Jim? I liked it too. I think Jay found it. We went back for lunch once or twice. Was it Maxime Bistro Francais? http://www.maximedc.com Some of you also scored some nice wine at a lunch at Bistrot du Coin one year. I haven’t been there, don’t know their capacit...

Looking forward to seeing the gang again. It’s been too long. I have refundable rooms booked at the Marriott Georgetown at 1221 22d St NW (closer to DuPont Circle than Gtown) and at the Hampton Inn Convention Center at 901 6th St NW. Hampton Inn is walking distance to Union Station and Charlie Palmer.

2015 Bordeaux: Panos Kakaviatos' blog

I like Panos Kakaviatos' approach to tastings and ratings, as well as his writing style, and often agree with his take. Panos recently tasted the 2015s in bottle. Very positive reviews but not up to 2016, and for some communes he says 2014 is better as well, and (listening Jim?) he singles out 2014 ...

I’m in. The group may be too small for our usual room at Charlie Palmer. I can call to see what their policy is. Last I checked it was just a minimum food/beverage. If it’s not too much given our size I can make the arrangements there. If Charlie Palmer won’t work I can try to get some other leads. ...

Very nice hommage à M. Pontallier. One of my fondest memories, and one of my peak wine experiences, was the BWE visit to Ch. Margaux in 2005 and the dinner conversation sitting next to Paul Pontallier. We talked about everything from corks vs screwcaps to the Iraq war. A well-rounded, truly gentle g...

Re: 95 Montrose, 95 Gazin, and a couple more

I’ve been very happy with my 95s, though not ecstatic/blown away. Except for the first growths. I was extremely happy with them. Not because they tasted that great, but because the prices for them got just plain silly about 7-8 years ago. I ended up drinking a few and auctioning off the majority.

Not a top Pomerol Nic, agreed. I liked it better than Parker, who gave it 87 points and said in 2002: The last two tastings have been better than early tastings, suggesting I underrated the wine. It is still somewhat austere, with a rather evolved dark garnet color already revealing some amber. The ...

A lot of truth in there Alex. You have a difficult task in combating a well-entrenched mindset about Bordeaux. Agreed Arv. I usually start drinking my CdPs at about age 8 and find most in my wheelhouse at age 10-20. The ones I like best, like Beaucastel and Vieux Telegraphe, get even better with more age than that. Charvin is a candidate for that group but I don’t have enough experience with old bottles of i...

I haven’t had the 2015, but Charvin is usually considered a relatively traditional producer. IOW not one you’d expect to be over-ripe or over-sweet. That said, young Grenache can come across as too sweet.

This thread shows how difficult it is to generalize. Some organic wines may be on the high-acid, AFWE end of the balance spectrum, but it’s not a reliable indicator. See Jacques' list above. On the other hand, when it comes to sans soufre or "natural" wines, the risk of an unbalanced wine ...

Great post by Claudius on the foibles of trying to label Bdx as "modern" or "traditional." There are so many factors and meanings, it can vary from year to year for the same property, and it’s so subjective. Yet there is clearly a spectrum as Arv points out. Carlos, good to see y...

Stefan, at least 3 levels. C3-C6 for sure. Possibly down to C7 or T1 depending on how well the bone holds the screws. Posterior approach which is painful longer but should give a more solid fusion and less mucking around the swallowing nerves.
