Re: 2012 Ribera Del Duero Emilio Moro

Nic I like tempranillo and should have more of it n my cellar. I'm surprised that the local wine shop would be pouring (dispensing) 2006 Troplong. I'm not familiar with that particular vintage but would guess it would be at the nadir of its dumb stage. Not a smart move on their part if their goal is...

Re: 2015 vintage in Bordeaux - my early assumption!

Great report as always Izak. Love the pictures too.

Nothing anyone says or does will get me to buy a single bottle of 2015 Bordeaux.

There.

I said it.

Now all I have to do is back it up over the next 3 years.

Re: 2003 d'Armailhac

I bought no 2003s as futures due to reports of record heat and concerns about cooked/roasted flavors in the wines. The en primeur message was choose carefully, and I chose not to buy based on barrel tastings in the spring of 2004. I did buy a year or two later when it was clear which wines did well.

Re: Bordeaux: a trickle down effect?

Rob, I believe that Alex means classed growths when he writes great growths. As opposed to petit chateaux. I'm not sure if he classifies Bordeaux supérieur with the great growths or the little guys. Alex, it was certainly top-down for me. My first vintage was 1982 and I (stupidly) didn't start with ...

It could be in a warehouse over the weekend, offloaded from the long-haul trailer and waiting to be loaded onto the delivery truck. Today's offer of 2004 Pol Roger Winston Churchill pre-arrivals at $140 would be irresistible if it weren't for the history. It feels like the discounts just keep getting bigger to keep the cash coming in. The increasing frequency and magnitude of these too-good-to-be-true deals suggests increasing d...

Bill, this is very disconcerting. From what I can tell, in case of bankruptcy, those who sue are treated preferentially to those who have unfilled orders. I hear you Danny. It takes some planning to open a Sauternes. Rob has the right idea, but we often forget or the appetizer isn't a good match for Sauternes. We have to limit the amount of wine with the dinner so there's some room left at the end. One saving grace I've found with Sauternes is that th...

Re: TN: Dinner at Magdalena in Baltimore with 1988 Lynch Bages and 1997 Yquem

I don't have any of the '96 Yquem. This is what Parker had to say about it in 2003, when he rated it 95: Compared with the flamboyant aromatics of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 plays it closer to the vest, although there is a lot going on. Light gold with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts int...

Ian, the remaining half-bottle of 1997 Yquem was even better the next evening, after spending a day in the fridge. Richer, fuller-bodied and more complex, with a longer finish than the night before. Easily outstanding, a notch above excellent in my book. I don't typically assign points, but if press...

Patrick, I'm with you on those stern tannins, the blood and iron and subtle fruit that doesn't really blossom for decades. I'm sure I don't know how modern vintages will turn out at age 20. They aren't starting from the same place, but I'm hoping they develop at least some of that magic.

Re: 2010 Cantemerle: $43.80 at Premier Cru - In Stock!

All this 2010 Cantemerle enablement, especially Jim's praise, has me tempted, as does Parker's note below. It's just that needing 10 years of cellaring that's holding me back. The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have en...

I drank my few 1996 Talbot as well. Very nice stuff but I'm sure it's got many great years ahead. I stupidly bought very little in '96, and those I do have other than the Ducru (Leoville Barton and Leoville las Cases), are probably not even close to ready.
