I usually plan a visit to Minnesota in February. Of course I don't mind snow or cold weather. January is for hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Re: LYNCH vs. BARON IV: EARTHQUAKE IN SAN FRANCISCO

All three wines were very good. I thought the Lynch showed very well - for me, it was a toss-up with the Baron for best wine. Surprised that the Lalande was third place on my card. All the wines (and particularly the Lynch) could have used longer decanting time.

Re: Biggest Recent Disappointment?

1986 La Mission Haut Brion - last December, a good wine in the 90-92 point range. OK, that's no so bad but at the same dinner, 1986 Rausan Segla (96) was a big step up as was 1982 Gruaud Larose (97). Even 1998 Pape Clement (93) topped the 1986 LMHB. Past examples produced similar results - solid win...

We drank a bottle of the 1982 Haut Batailley last week. It was fresh and a bit tart, bit like cranberry - went very well with pasta and red sauce. Probably getting towards the end of its prime drinking window. This was the seventh or eighth bottle I've had of the 1982 and all have been solid but not...

December 31, 1977 blind tasting of red wine in Minneapolis. Easy winners all 1970 Bordeaux - in order: Lascombes (Margaux), Gloria (St Julian), Grand Village (St Emilion, I think). Non-Bordeaux others far behind.

I particularly disliked the 1994 wines from St Emilion - perhaps it was the disagreeable flavor of unripe Cab Franc. Better luck with Latour, LLC, Haut Brion and a couple others from the left bank.
