Re: President Trump

Well, yet another negative development with Anthony Kennedy's retirement hitting the newswires a few minutes ago. I hate to think of the long-term ramifications of this (and quite possibly more to come) as Supreme Court composition will last well beyond DT's reign - I'm relatively younger, consider ...

Re: More 2017 Commentary

Yeah I couldn't help but notice the less than spectacular pricing for the 2017s. As I will be 60 this year I'm planning for 2016 to be my last vintage of any significant quantity. So is $105 a good price for 2017 Lynch Bages? I just received the Total Wine En Primeur offer #5 in my in box. Just my ...

Re: 2015 Cantemerle - Yum!

Thanks - I'm excited to open quite a few 2015 splits this Fall as everything trickles in to get a better read on the vintage. Great to hear re Cantemerle. I've given this estate a much stronger look post their 2010 vintage, which I thought was a stand out effort.

Re: More 2017 Commentary

Bumping this thread up a bit after quite a few releases have hit.... Outside of unique formats, I see zero reason to participate thus far in this year's campaign and am surprised at how aggressively priced a lot of these releases have been (even factoring in some USD weakness). Granted, there are st...

These wines are smoking good....had both a 2009 and a 2010 lately that were both great. I'm not a fan of CDP with too much age on them, so both vintages are drinking perfectly for my tastes right now.

I am drinking this wine right now as I type, and you describe it well in your original note, David. This is a damn good wine, especially for an 03. I don't think there's any reason to not open one now if you have any - in a great place right now.

Re: Cos d'Estournel - superb Second Cru wine!

I actually opened an 86 a few weekends ago that I thought was lovely....my notes were as follows: Perfect cork and high neck fill, on PnP a bit thin, green, and acidic with some barnyard funk, but letting sit for 90 min worked the magic. This wine put on some massive weight and by 2-3 hours was at i...

Re: Deals Thread

Millesima has a nice Thanksgiving sale, but purchases by the case....20% off on order of any two cases

Most interesting to me was the 2010 Cantemerle at $39.20/btl if buying two cases
2010 Montrose around $224/btl on 12 (those are cases of 6), which seemed like strong pricing as well

Re: What is (are) your favourite vintage(s) of Pichon Baron?

For drinking today: 1989 > 2000 > 1990 > 2010 For value: 2010 hands down, incredibly bright future The 1989 is fresh in my mind having just opened a bottle two weeks ago, this one being from pristine provenance with perfect fill. Honestly one of my favorite wines and I still think a relative value a...

Re: Did we lose a generation of great Bordeaux because of RMP?

Having not tasted any myself, but reading notes like what have been posted on here and other friends of mine in the UK whose palates I trust, I have to think that it likely has changed over the last few vintages. Take an estate like Pavie for instance - arguably in possession of one of best terroirs...

Re: 2000 Tasting

Very nicely done - thanks for sharing these notes. I actually had a 2000 LB a few months ago and had much the same impression as you. Other than the 2003 vintage for them (where the house style + vintage characteristics combined for a truly awesome wine), this is one of my favorites. I place it near...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

I've substantially limited mine as well - I mentioned it earlier as well as a few others, but 2014 seems like the savvy vintage to really look at purchasing in relation to 2015/2016 pricing. Cos, Montrose, Canon, and Calon Segur were really the only ones I ended up thinking were worthwhile purchasin...

Calon Segur? Just when my interest was starting to wane, this one catches my eye - could be worth snagging a few.... 2016 is the birth year of my daughter, so I do have some emotional attachment to the vintage as well as this particular wine (as a baby, she loves anything heart-shaped and finds the ...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

Jim what 2014's are you referring to that are priced better than the current offerings of 2016 Sorry for the tardy response, but I am just looking at relationships such as Lynch Bages, where you can pick up the 2014 vintage $80-85/btl, while 2016's are being offered +$40/btl (close to +50%) versus ...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

My interest in this campaign is massively starting to wane. Other than bottles of Montrose, Cos, Beychevelle, and Tour St. D (extra JimH) amounting in total to a little over a case and a half, I see very little reason to chase from here..... I find a lot of recent release prices to be blistering and...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

Montrose? Another one that seems reasonably priced imo considering the score, what 2009/2010 go for, and flat YoY pricing....I keep watching the USD slowly fade, and as a US consumer, I still think it's worth snagging a fair amount. I keep hearing "fools rush in", "scarcity is manufac...

Re: Seems to me 2016 is coming out priced fairly rationally.

Jim, I'd still be a buyer at $155. When Cos is on, it's on, and it's up there with some of my favorite wine experiences. Given the nature of the vintage, I could see this as going down as one of their better if not best vintages.

Re: Seems to me 2016 is coming out priced fairly rationally.

I think that for the most part, I tend to agree. Just looking at 2010 as a reasonable benchmark, when you can pick up certain wines like Cantemerle for a 30%+ discount relative to what 2009/2010 go for, that seems about right and worthwhile to consider as a futures purchase, imo. Cos initial release...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

NM's write up yesterday on 2016 was pretty good. His enthusiasm for (and reasonably fair release pricing on) Cos convinced me to pick up a few out of curiosity. I'm not a fan of the 2009 (which was overdone for my tastes) but liked the 2010 and many back vintages, so I'm hoping for a more classicall...

Re: 2016 Bordeaux futures - anyone biting?

Being tempted by Tour St.-Christophe.... at $25ish/btl with decent reviews and spare-no-expense new owners looking to build a brand, it seems like a relative bargain. Minimal risk to this purchase imo. One thing I have been reading that has been mentioned somewhat consistently by a few reviewers (an...
