The sky high electric bills were for people who got a contract to pay spot for all of their electricity. Most of the time, they get a great rate, well below market, since they're buying unsold electricity.

I consigned with Zachy's as part of the move to Colorado. They had single-seller (me) online auction for most - the highest end lots went to a live auction in HK.

Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?
Before 1982, the DOC requirements for all designations of Barolo were a minimum of 2 years in cask and total aging before release of 3 years for DOC, 4 years for Riserva, and 5 years for Riserva Speciale. So basically, any Barolo held for 5 years could be labeled Riserva Speciale. Despite the abilit...

Re: President Trump
I think it’s clear at this point that for most Republicans Trump’s strong-man, fascistic, demagoguery are a feature not a bug. We have to think about the problem from the perspective of the small mind of the politician. In the Republicans' case, their voters have been split down the middle between ...

Not a broken bottle (knock wood) but went to the cellar and found a stain on the rack...the cork had fallen into our lone bottle of 1961 Petrus. Got on the phone to a few nearby winos and shared the remainder. It was still really amazing, so the cork must have failed very recently! I also had a bott...

Re: 2001 Nicolas Potel Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Gaudichots
Interesting. The vineyards are set in stone but the marketing seems more flexible. The one I am most certain of is that the sub-plots of Corton -- all Grand Cru -- can be labeled with or without the sub-plot designation. I can easily see where DRC might declassify the Les Gaudichots grapes from La T...

Ciao marcs, I was mostly taking about the Barolo DOCG (normale) as far as approachability, not Cru's and certainly not the high end producers. Roberto Conterno is still making wines that need lots of time. The 2012 vintage was weaker than most recently, but R Conterno has a reputation for making the...

And, at least for more modern wines, displacing the air in the bottle with an inert gas (sparging) is presumably more thorough in the enclosed environment of automated bottling lines.

Hey Nic, The answers are a bit intertwined, so - Try Nebbiolo d'Alba from good QPR producers (se below) for early drinkers. Also, a bit surprisingly, many Barolo and Barbaresco estates in 2016 seem to have produced amazingly approachable "normale" wines. - Barolo and Barbaresco used to be ...

At the risk of being ostracized (or is that my usual state?), those Aussie ooze-monsters were fun to drink on release. Mostly as cocktail substitutes at parties or with a giant slab of grilled beef. Kenji Lopez-Alt's quick take on reverse sear I've tried the "sear first and then sous vide" a few times for steak - it seems to imbue some grilled flavor into the steak -- but it makes loading the bags a bit harder and it still needs another sear at the end to get the crispy sizzle. They ...
