Re: A pleasant surprise-1993 Pichon Baron
When I got into high end wine there were no wines to be had on shelves prior to 1994. Save some older 1970's and odd year 1980's. 1991 California CabSauv based wines are my favorite vintages of that ilk. To me that rank far higher than the lauded 1994's. But with my liking of so-called 'off' vintage...

Buying local
You probably know by now I am a fan of local produce, whatever it is. I mean, that's how things started in Europe for wines, cheese, food. Several things have cropped up lately around here. Sure, I've been buying at local roadside farm stands and such for years, but recently there are actual local t...

Kinda weird, you drive into New Haven and see signs for Yale Polo grounds and such. Being a rube from North Carolina, and now Maryland, it's just weird. Less weird from Md.

Jim, That Storm of the Century movie was partly filmed in Glouchester also, except it was bunk. The actual bar is across the street and a little up from the docks of Gorton's piers, the movie version showed a restuarant on the pier (eaten at it). Still want to visit Salem. Harry (and Jim),
No idea. 2003 was the weirdest vintage I ever tried young. Heck, haven't even had one in a year or so. Honestly, just didn't care for it. So different from other first release tries. Personnal palate only. Just answered so if you didn't like it you'd have company.

Tim, Glad there's another fan of "off" vintages out there. The 1994 d'Issan turned me on to the Margaux wines. I still remember just sniffing it on the back deck on a mild Summer evening for hours. The good news is I've had these wines since 2000 or so in my cellar, which is passive, the b...

Interesting,
I think I may have some 1995 CdM in the cellar. Haven't tried one in years and it was kinda closed and tannic then (hmm, around 2001?). I did buy a case of the 1998 ($250) and have 3 or four left.
Huh, just what are these going for now?

Ah.
I haven't been dissappointed with the 2000's I've tried. Bought a case of the Brown, still have several left. Lovely wine.
Guess one of the reasons I am confused over some who are GaGa over the third wine of Latour. Always was shit to me.

Got to admit, the few (red or white) 2003 Bordeaux I tried was ...heh...whatever. Didn't much care for that vintage. Personnal taste.
2005 seems different. Real Deal kinda thing.
But then I liked 2001 and 2002 also. Varying degrees.

Glad to hear François is still going strong.
One of his dinners may well be interesting, but I doubt I'd ever be able to appreciate 100 year old wines as he does. For those who have never met François, the older the better it seems.
Hasn't he tasted a 1900 Margaux?

Yes, I wouldn't even pay $28 for that mediocrity, let alone $268. That last bottle of 2000 Carruades I had a few months back was a notch above swill. There's going to be a crash. It is going to be a big one. I wonder what will be the impact on Harry's 2007 CdPs? This about the 2005? Carruades 2005 ...

I have a case plus of 1998 CdPs. I opened one a couple three months ago, forget which. I almost melted into my leather chair. They will probably peak in my cellar this year or next. So smooth, so tasty, so aromatic. Not sure the current prices but one does need to give them lots of time. I haven't t...

Claudius,
I'm sure the negociants and resellers are making far more than they used to, but I'm also sure Margaux et al are making far more too. I guess now they are making close to $200 profit at least on each bottle of 10000-20000+ case production. Don't expect sympathy from me.
