Re: Getting to Know You Guys: What % of Your Cellar is Bdx and

Lynch Bages '86, '89 and '90 are all spectacular. These are wines I wish, double wish, I would have spring deeply for when I was a tadpole. Now it's out of my reach for the most part - I can pick up one or two here and there, but not in bulk. Such a great, steady estate.

2010 Bordeaux Buying Plan?

Ok boys and girls, I'm new here, so disavow me if another thread exists on this subject. I searched, but alas, found nothing. Reading what the esteemed critics write, and I think I may prefer 2010 to 2009. The 2010s are about to be scored by Uncle Bob and will start hitting the shelves soon. So what...

You guys should have seen Robert the other night trying to convince my wife to let me go to Dallas...honestly, I'm not sure we would ever be invited back, but it would be a hell of alot of fun..lol After she found out our Vegas business trips coinciding were no coinky-dink, she will never look at m...

That's funny - On a Bordeaux BB, this thread alone, 3 of us have Ridge as our largest holding. Speaks volumes about that winery, stylistically. If you all have not tried it yet, the 2009 Ridge Estate Cab is fantastic, and at $40, a by the case purchase, especially at 1/4 the price of the Monte Bello.

Re: Getting to Know You Guys: What % of Your Cellar is Bdx and

There was a time when I was about 75% Bdx, and then Florida allowed importation of private wine sales. Before that, finding a decent Northern Rhone or Chinon in Florida was like finding someone that spoke English (ok, I kid, and I'm Spanish, too - but I just cannot speak the language). Since then I'...

Re: Aging Red Bdx

I have drunk about 15 bottles of 2003 Pontet Canet, it is one of my favorite wines of the past ten years. I have a case each of the 1996, 2003, 2004, and 2006 Pontet Canet. We'll do a Pontet Canet vertical in 20 years... or beyond, in the Great Tasting Room in the Sky. Baller! I'm just a poor littl...

I wish I had something intelligent to say about the '03 PC, but I ended up buying LP, Cos, Pavie, St.Pierre and a host of other smaller estates and St. Ems. instead. I have not tasted the '03 PC since shortly after release. These were seductive wines early on, but I must say, my St. Pierre has far e...

Re: Aging Red Bdx

We can discuss whether the differences between the '00s or '09s and the '82s are greater or more significant than the differences between the '82s and the '61s, but how today's wines will develop in 20 years remains speculation. No mention of 1990? Seems to be "of the same breed" but is o...

I hope this does not sound sexist, and certainly is not intended that way, but I believe that in general women are better tasters than men. Many women, especially of prior generations, simply were more exposed to scents and tastes, through perfumes, lotions, oils, baths and cooking. My wife, sister ...

I'm going to make a bold statement: I love young Bordeaux. I'm not trying to be facetious or provocative. I love old Bordeaux as well, of course. But I've had many a young bottle of Bordeaux that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Sure, sometimes I run into one that is in an awkward stage. But many times I...

Re: Guidelines for tasting young BDX? Wally's UGC 20

How generous are the pours at these events? I gave up on mass tastings 10+ years ago. I learned that my crude country palate could not make an informed decision on a minimal, typical tasting size pour, especially out of mediocre glasses and wine at less than optimum temperature. Are these UGC events...

Where for $32? I think I paid $40 on release.

The '08 version was not that impressive either, quite hollow on the mid-palate. I bought a slew of 375s from this vintage, thinking it a drinking vintage, and have some hits and some misses. Barde Haut was a miss.

Claudius - Fortunately I do not have many '04 St Ems, but will note that the '04 left banks I have checked on over the past year are quite nice: SHL, Leoville Poyferre, Alter Ego, etc. I have the '04 Lascombes as well, but have not popped one. Pavie, by the way, is damn fine in '04, so not saying th...

Re: TN: 2005 Château Les Grands Chênes (France, Bordeaux, Médoc)

I've always been amused that the name of this Chateau is essentially "Chateau of the Large Oaks".

It's over-oaked for my palate, but I did think '05 pulled it off better than other recent vintages. Nicely priced, though.

Interesting. I have a few bottles remaining, but have been trying 1 bottle a year since 2008 and my impression was that the wine was still closed (e.g. Oak, no fruit). Maybe that's the best this wine gets? I'm still hoping rp had it right. Hopefully you will have a better experience. My bottle, pur...

TN 2004 Ch. Fleur Cardinale: For the Sun-Kissed Beach Ladies

Coconut Oil. On the nose, on the palate. Overwhelming, frankly. As much as I enjoyed and bought deeply the 2005, this 2004 is a total let-down. Much better on release, but the fruit is starting to dry, the tannins are drying and the wood and coconut oil is coming to the fore. Just a bad, modernized ...

FWIW, if BWE had a sub-category for QPR of the year, I'd highly recommend 2009 Ch. Lanessan. A ridiculously good, classic, red-fruit Bordeaux that can be found for $20 still. A "by the case" purchase. Approachable now, but clearly one that will reward 7-8 years or more. As much as I love t...
