Welcome Matt, and good to have another Kiwi join the community (I think the Ozzies currently outnumber us).
Am curious as to where your sourcing your wines locally?
Cheers.

I bought 3 bottles of this upon release, but cant really remember why. The first 2 bottles had in 2016 didn't particularly impress and I had the last bottle tonight. The first couple glasses were PNP but I did also decant for a couple of hours. Beautiful bouquet of intense leather and hints of vanil...

2011 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett
Peach and lime. Couldn't detect any kerosene notes and I thought it lacked a bit of acidity. Much as I love aged German Riesling, I preferred this more in its youth.

2020 Kumeu River Chardonnay Rays Road: I don't drink a lot of New Zealand wines but was tempted to try this after its big brother (the 2020 "Mates") took out some recent awards. Enjoyed this. Citrus, lime and green apple. Subtle and refined, not overly buttery at all. Very enjoyable and wo...

Thanks for the notes, and glad to hear that you enjoyed them. I had two 2011's of these a few years ago and unfortunately did not like either of them. It was particularly disappointing given the price I paid for them ($180 NZ). I've learnt that I prefer my CDP's young, as with 10 years of aging or s...

The 2014 Giscours was the one to really “wow” me recently Jim, but I did also have a Calon Segur 14 a couple of years ago and was very impressed. I have 5 CS 14 tucked away and wish I had more.
Great tasting note as well.

Took a punt on an inexpensive Italian this weekend. 2017 Cavallotto Langhe Freisa Bricco Boschis:
PNP and this was a lovely surprise. Red cherries, noticeable cranberries with vanilla overtones. Decent tannic grip yet overlaid with a lovely softness. Fantastic value. Must try and buy more.

I know very little about Loire reds, but summer has arrived early and I felt like something different and a little less heavy. Leather and cherries. Green pepper, some earthy tones - benefited from a bit of time in the fridge. Enjoyed this.

Re: Madiran
Madiran is hard core tannin pig stuff, Lol! "Hardcore" is a great way to describe Madiran :D Finished off the Château d'Aydie last night. It had settled down a bit, whilst still displaying intense tannic grip. My gums were stuck together by the end, but I enjoyed this, and will look to pi...
Madiran
Was wondering what people’s thoughts/impressions were of Madiran – a wine region that seems to fly under the radar somewhat? I first discovered these wines when living in London, 20 odd years ago. There was a renowned cheese shop in Highbury, Islington (La Fromagerie) that used to also sell the odd ...

Interesting post. I would have thought it would be Southern Rhone for me, but I have been enjoying these less and less lately and so have either been drinking or selling at auction. New Zealand wines were number 2 for me. Mostly Te Mata Estate.

Re: Classic Bordeaux - Who Are The Remaining Stalwarts
A prior poster asked about Giscours. I do not think it is classic, nor do I think it is “modern” in the pejorative way that some of us use that term as applied to wine, but it does fall into that third bucket that Marcs mentions. It is well made from a technical point of view, IMHO, and actually ta...

Is Giscours not worth being considered "classic"? Whilst I've had some variable experiences with Giscours in the past, I cant think of one that I would have described as being modern. Perhaps not "old school" but certainly classic?

Ordered 6 of these at the beginning of the year, but they only arrived last week (no doubt delayed by Covid). Question, how much 16' Ch Phelan Segur should I get at $40, if any? I don't need it since I have plenty of other 16' Saint Estephe's but the pricing appears too good. Has anyone tried it? Snap. Had a 2015 Tour Saint-Bonnet last night as well. Your note sums it up nicely. Only thing I would add is that having had a few 2016 TSB's recently, I have found the 16s to be a slight step up in quality (i.e. bit more full bodied and a tad more complex). Both the 15 & 16s are great QPRs tho...

Enjoyed this. Raspberries and plums with a distinctive Pessac profile. Medium bodied with firm, grippy tannins. With a decant, opened up and became fuller bodied and tannic over time. Plenty of life left in this but also drinking beautifully now.

Ch Poujeaux 2009. PNP with a beautiful nose, intense blackcurrants and a hint of leather. Full bodied+, earthy, tannic and initially quite brawny and meaty.
