6 bottles of 2020 Shoresh from Tzora winery.
https://www.tzoravineyards.com/wine/shoresh
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Syrah (35%) , Petit Verdot (18%) and Merlot (12%), Kosher for Passover with no sense of place but still well made and tasty. Brought 3 bottles to a Seder with family, 2 bottles to Passover lunch at my cousin's and will bring the last one to the dinner we're invited to this Friday in Tel Aviv.

I bought six bottles of the unofficial third wine of Chateau Lafite for £22.50 a bottle, sourced from young vines at Lafite and Duhart and a 50-50 Cab-Merlot blend. From the 2018 vintage. They say it is already drinking well.

So last March a friend forwarded me the inserted below Lyle Fass pre arrival on the 2016 Il Poggione Brunello for wait for it, $37.99/per with a 12 bottle purchase so I told him to order me a case not really thinking it would get filled. Well I swung by my friends on the way home from work today and the wine is now in my possession and I am thoroughly kicking myself for not backing up the truck on this offer.

The thing I wanted to highlight here is just how bad the 3 tiered system of importation is for us when the importer, distributor and retailer all take their cuts and we end up with same wine for approximately double the cost.

Nicely done as that was gone by the time I logged in and resorted to picking up a 6er of the Roederer Collection 242 @ $39.99/per.

What's the difference between the standard DP and the Luminous edition? Forgive my ignorance.

On a side note, merchants are starting to deliver 2019 en primeur orders over here.
One already arrived (VCC), and a few more arriving next week.

There is no difference except that its put in a bottle that lights up and glows in the dark. And it seems Mark was in need of some for his next disco night soirée ;)

Indeed, Nicola, I have decided that, from here on out, I'm going to supplement my cellar with only top growths. If I die before I drink them, then so be it, they will be assets that should be allocated without too much problem by my loved ones. I am grateful to one Musigny151 for enabling me to get these Rausan Seglas at $79 each.

So I went to a Wine Cellarage 2020 JJ Prum Wine Dinner last night at the Parlour Room in NYC and got to taste through a wonderfully curated lineup that really went from strength to strength and finished off with some auction bottlings that were superlative.
2020 JJ Prum’s on show
2020 JJ Prum’s on show
When I checked pricing I almost choked as it seems like the pricing on the 2020 Prum lineup readjusted upwards by 20-30% across the board. So I did what any rational thinking value oriented individual would do and snapped up another 8 btls of the more traditionally styled 2019 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett @ $29.99/btl from Bottle King in Dumont followed by 8 btls of the 2019 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese @ $36.99 from the Bottle King in Princeton.

When we did a Prum tasting of Wehlener and Graacher, from Kabinett to GK Auslese, Graacher Spatlese was my favorite.

My purchases have declined greatly but still haunt auctions on occasion -- just snagged 8 bottles of 2010 La Conseillante (7 lightly scuffed labels) from Zachys at $202/bottle all in. The U.S. winesearcher retail low is $266...the London winesearcher retail low is $217, and the cost of the latest vintage futures is $230, so I guess it's not a screaming deal exactly, but remembering how good this wine was at our Thursday Pomerol dinner at BWE DC I'm glad to get it!

Over the past few days, I have dabbled in a medley of Barolos and a couple of Barbarescos...Got tied up with 2016s and 2019s of bordeaux lately, but was finally able to push through with my 2016 barolo purchases...Since 2016 is a great vintage, I went broadly instead of going deep on few...

It's hard to definitively pin down and say Modern/Traditional, so maybe saying "lean towards" one or the other is more apropos..Got producers who lean both ways and also somewhere in between... 8-)

2008 (for Cappellano) and 2010 (for Burlotto Monvigliero and Canonica Paiagallo) were the last vintages I was able to afford those producers. So no more of those for 2016... But nevertheless, I am happy to get what I could get, and I think Barolo Guru Signore Comte would approve the list... :P

Lean Modern ...
2016 Enzo Boglietti Arione - 2
2016 Enzo Boglietti Fossati - 2
2016 Paolo Scavino Bric Del Fiasc - 2

Lean Traditional...
2016 Elvio Cogno Ravera - 2
2016 Schiavenza Prapo - 2
2016 Marcarini Brunate - 2
2016 Fratelli Alessandria San Lorenzo di Verduno - 2
2016 Fratelli Alessandria Gramolere - 1
2016 Brezza Sarmassa - 1
2016 Brezza Barolo Normale - 1

2015 GD Vajra Bricco Delle Viole - 3
2015 Cascina Baricchi Rose delle Casasse - 2 (The only Nebbiolo Rose clone barbaresco producer out there)

Somewhere in between ???
2016 Luigi Pira Vigna Rionda - 2
2016 Azelia Bricco Fiasco - 1
2016 Azelia Margheria - 1

I am eyeing to get 2013 Elvio Cogno Vigna Elena, and I should be done... :)

I tried this recently, side by side with the 2014 and both my friend (who's a major Barolo hound) and I decided it wasn't worth it at the same price. The 2014 is and I bought 3. Will shoot for some of the 2016 if I can find the right price. Skipping 2015

Thanks Joel, for pointing that out.

Actually I meant 2013, not 2015. I corrected the vintage in my original post...2016 will be probably even more expensive. And 2013 is no slouch either when compared to 2016...It's prudent to skip 2015 Vigna Elena...

Ah the 2013 is tempting to me as well. May consider myself.

I'm not the best with notes, however I loved the style. 2014 was cool, dark fruited, brooding but in a good way. Really expressing the fruit and the structure.

The 2015 was more red fruited, but showed the alcohol a bit more and just felt out of balance/disjointed. Not unlike how a lot of people describe the 2015 Bordeaux wines that they are not a fan of.

Take those with a grain of salt as I almost never taste young Barolo. However my friend Andrew felt very similarly about both. We also had similar palates for the 2017 Burlotto single vineyard lineup. The Monvigliero is amazing. I can only imagine how good the 2016 is. I know Ian raves about it.

Thanks Joel. The notes was quite helpful...Yeah, I completely get when you refer to the alcohol level. The only 2015 Barolo that I got was Vajra Bricco delle Viole. The grapes are grown at a higher altitude for this cru in the commune.

2015 is a warm vintage and Barolos generally also come out with higher ABVs. But I feel Nebbiolo’s high acid sort of attenuates the heat. I still wish they come out with lower ABVs though...
