Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
Thought I would start this as there are times I come across good buys.
Grapes the Wine Co in White Plains has the 2019 Lynch Bages at $149

Or just change the name of the thread to ‘Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages’.
So Mark, I am a little curious what changed into making this wine a sudden wine deal for several reasons (1) I am pretty sure I remember you poo-pooing this very same wine saying something to the extent that you haven’t tasted a worthwhile Lynch Bages but once every 30 some odd years (2) $90 on futures but now $150 which kind of drastically changes its value proposition, though in the pantheon of great Lynches might still prove to be a savvy entry point (3) Jeb Dunnuck 100 points, c’mon (4) I tasted it at the end of June at the UGC next to both the Pichon’s and on that day, for my palate both of the Pichon’s were far superior. The Baron was dark, brooding and awe inspiring in its purity, the Comtesse was more polished and technically perfect than in years past and was the essence of class in a glass, whereas the Lynch was red fruited and lighter styled and did not really scale the same heights. Off bottle, I don’t think so, a little closed, maybe but maybe I should have gone back for another sample before writing it off.

Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
Thanks Jacques. Yes it works, and it will make for an interesting discussion.
First, like most 2019s, Lynch was underpriced on release. I also bought Montrose for $135, VCC for $209 etc. Most of the sought after wines have seen an increase of 30% plus, so the original release price is a bit irrelevant.
Second, the Bordelais are kicking themselves that they released a really good vintage so cheaply, and I have heard from several sources they will not make the same mistake again, so it is very unlikely that you will be able to get Bordeaux of this quality from a top vintage at this kind of price again.
Thirdly it is a good wine. From the three or four wines I have tasted, I like the vintage in general, and I did taste the Lynch, and really thought it was one of those really great examples of the wine; a return to the classic, terroir driven Lynch Bages. Sadly, I did not go to UGC, so can’t compare to the Pichons, but very happy that I did buy the Lynch, and even happier that I did get it at the official release price. It would still work at the Grapes price.

Thanks Mark and it’s hard to disagree with the above response when I too agree with each of your general points.
Having not bought the Lynch (or anything else on futures) and now being faced with a 66.67% higher price is honestly a tough pill for me to swallow and I can only hope that the stronger dollar erodes some of those gains in the coming months.

Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
At EP prices, LB is a no-brainer, but so were almost of the 2019 releases.
There's still a little bit of juice left @ $150, but clearly not the bargain it once was. I think 19 LB will be one of the better vintages, if not the best, since the turn of the century, but I suspect will fall short of the 89 & 90. 14.5% alcohol a slight worry?
The 2020 could be every bit as good, and is cheaper than the 19 - a more pleasing 13.4% abv but acidity is a little low at 3.73pH.

Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
As I never tire of saying … I loaded up on - the now 100 pt rated - Lynch Bages 2019 and have 30 bottles and 24 half bottles…because it seemed such compelling value based on the assessment of one particular reviewer I have trusted over the years…it looked compelling based on this chart at the time of purchase:
So Lynch comprises 54 of the 162 bottles of 2019 that I own. But I do own more 2016 (229), 2010 (189) and 1996 (167)

I should probably also add that there is currently only 1 wholesale price that I see over here in the NJ wholesale system and that is a prearrival wholesale price is $1540/cs or $128.33/per through Touton who generally does not have the most competitive pricing. I am guessing that this is where Posner sourced the wine as the offer was also listed as a prearrival. We shall see what the field looks like in a couple of months time as more stocks make their way over here and whether this new price level holds or if the market softens.
Re: Wine deals threads
2019 was an outlier year for en primeur value, and I’m happy to have bought Lynch and both Pichons. Regarding quality, there could be a component of personal style preference. I hope my taste and olfactory senses are still functioning when it comes time to try these three beauties. Should be a fun comparison.jckba wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 12:30 am Or just change the name of the thread to ‘Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages’.

I'll buy a bottle when it's released in NH and taste it in the name of science.
If I like it I'll buy another 2-3 bottles.

Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
I bought 6 of these on futures + 3 splits. Definitely took Ian's advice when he originally posted about it. Although I am a little worried about the 14.5% alcohol. Unless this was a possible tariff manipulation like what happened in 2018.
I'm sure this has been posted about before. But do you all think that this will eclipse the 2016?

Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
Even I got a bottle and a half of the Lynch Bages 2019. Bought more of the 2019 than any other futures but still feel I should have bought a lot more.
Re: Discussion of 2019 Lynch Bages…
I believe those are vintage purchase totals and not Lynch Bages hoarding, well except for the 2019 that is.
