2005 Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne

Last night, i went to dinner at friend's place and wanted to check where the 2005 are in their aging, opening an affordable wine. With chicken and brie/mushrooms gnocchis, i decanted the 2005 Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne 90 minutes ahead. Very dark color, the nose was a dense mix of black cocoa, black cherries, blackberries, with a hint of spices. Kind of dusty nose, but lot of weight. In mouth, not fully opened yet, this wine is made in a traditional way. No sweetness, can't feel any oak. Good mineral flavors, cherries, dense mouth. Thick black chocolate, tea, little bit of herbs, with a long black cherries and plums finish. Good structure, that makes the wine long. Very good and guess it will be even better in 3-5 years.tn: 89+.

The 2015-2016 are aroung 60 $cad, while i paid 36 $cad for the 2005, 12 years ago.

Liquid coolant: a fully mature 2000 G-C-D

On a triple teen temp day, the hottest I can ever recall in my city (113F or 114F depending on when it peaks!) I am having some older Grand Corbin Despagne after a busy morning/afternoon running chores. Garnet core, mature edges. Forest, herbs, cinnamon on the nose, cranberry/pencil on the palate. Resolved tannin, still some acid. Medium bodied, complex and delicious. The same family has run this since the Napoleonic era and favors traditional ways - only half new oak, lots of cab franc, 46 year old vines. This St Emilion had a high TPI of 85 and was intended for long aging.
