-1998 Vallouit Les Roziers Côte Rotie x 6+ (big assist from the Comte sourcing this as it’s unavailable in the USA and Guigal bought up this Domaine circa 2005 … another reason to do BWE London in 2023!)
-2019 Gerard Boulay Clos de Beaujeu Sancerre Chavignol x 6 (probably my favorite Sauvignon Blanc producer in the world and won at auction at a substantial discount)

I will preface this purchase with the question of what exactly constitutes a 100 point rating for a young nebbiolo as I find this absurd. Well this is Kerin O’Keefe’s version which I bought in quantity b/c the opportunity presented itself.

Kerin is the ultimate grade inflator, more than sucker... :o She has this thing for ‘marasca cherry’, and boy she can nail it in every Nebbiolo with a thump...

But anyway, I don’t know about 2019, but that’s one heck a producer, and I myself have been looking for the 15/16 version of it for awhile...

1 x 2014 Niellon Clos St Jean Chassagne Montrachet for $78 including commission at auction. At that price, this was a must buy even though I have no other wine there, so the temptation will be strong to put together a case for shipping value.

Don’t recall if I listed these when I bought them or not. They just arrived:
3 x 2010 Haut Brion
7 x 2014 La Lagune
2 x 2017 Keller Dalsheimer Hubecker TBA (375)

Popped one of the 2014 La Lagune. Don’t tell Bill, but chalk up another masochist willing to endure the trials and tribulations of this swill.

If you must subject yourself to La Lagune, I suggest the 2013. It has the advantage of not tasting like La Lagune.

Yes. I actually did like that wine.
I thought it would have been a nice little steak wine.
It hit the markets at like $50+, which was a little too much.
Had it been in the $40 range I would have bought a couple bottles.

Right, David. “Cabernet Sauvignon” is printed on the label. Kinda like the warning messages on packs of cigarettes.

4 x 2010 Palmer - I blame Musigny for this one:
Musigny 151 wrote: Tue Nov 22, 2022 4:22 am Since there is little hope for another Pomerol 2014 to win, I will stifle any call for 2014 VCC. So I think I will go for an Uber Medoc, the utterly brilliant if totally unready 2010 Palmer. If the merchants in 1855 could have tasted this wine, they would have crowned it as a First Growth.

I think I will uncork a bottle with the Thanksgiving feast.

Love these 2017s PYCMs, prices have crept up but still a good deal at auction.

There is no right or wrong, just more fun.

But more seriously, with cost-of-living increases on everyone’s mind here and around the world it seems as if wine pricing for the most part have been resistant to these inflationary pressures and I really wonder how much longer that can last.

Just bought 6 half bottles of Prum Eiswein GK 1998. Really excited by this. Tasted several years ago, and never forgot how great it was, so grabbed them when it was offered.

Huh? Have people not seen a giant surge in high end wine prices over the past couple of years?

I wasn’t really referring to the high end per se but rather if the rising tide will lift all wine boats equally and from where I am sitting, that really hasn’t happened across the board. Shipping costs and labor costs are up yet wholesale wine pricing has not really changed outside the tariffs from several years back, so once these higher costs are factored in, I think you are going to have to have a corresponding rise in wine pricing and it’s really as simple as that.

Just paid $990 to fill my oil tank, ugh.
Not long ago I was paying $350.
I successfully lobbied the Maine legislature to give court-appointed lawyers raises from $60 to $80 per hour a couple years ago.
Now I'm pushing for a raise up to $158 per hour and I think we're going to get it.
Plumbers, carpenters, nurses... Everything is very expensive these days.
Even beer distributors are making more than us when you factor in benefits and everything else.
I agree with jckba, in general the price increases for fine Bordeaux have been pretty tempered when you think about it.

Jim, do you know if it costs more to heat with oil than with natural gas at current prices? Wondering if it would be worth the investment to convert to gas furnace equipment - assuming you have access to natural gas where you are.

I have two houses, Jon, one with oil the other with natural gas.
Oil is much more expensive.
I’m probably going to end up selling this bigger house and move into my smaller gas heated house sometime in the next couple years as I move into semi retirement.

Well, you’ve still got ~5 weeks to make hay, brother! I find this time of year to be ripe for buying.

Marcs, I’ll join you in a New Year’s buying freeze. Wanna make it interesting: first one out has to buy the other 1 bottle of whatever made them break the freeze?

I’m setting myself up for the classic BWE self-enabling move where a pledge to stop buying later becomes an excuse to buy more now. The move is completed when the pledge to stop buying more later is broken

I was going pretty well mid year this year but resolve crumbled and I’m down five cases in the last couple of months. Five pretty fancy cases 😩

But this time it’s happening. For chrissakes there’s no way I could look at my inventory and even for a moment imagine I need any more wine. When are we going to start the no-buy pledge thread that lasts like the first month or so of every new year?

Complete buying freezes are as irrational as thinking anyone needs thousands of bottles of wine, on hand, at all times, in a climate-controlled bunker... so that the wine can age.

The key I've found is to just try to drink or sell more than you buy. That really helped me, I'm down -295 bottles net this year even though I bought a bunch of white wines and some mature reds too.

Down 295 bottles despite buying some? So you’re averaging something like a bottle a day of consumption? I couldn’t physically handle that I don’t think. Maybe if I had more parties.

I think I probably only bought ten cases at most this year, so 120 bottles (and possibly a bit less, haven’t counted) but I’m not sure I’m down. My consumption just isn’t that high
