2012 Canon reconsidered...

I was a little down on this wine the other night at the outset, it seemed a little dull and uninteresting at first, but then its elegance and class kind of snuck up on me by the end, kind of like that '14 La Conseillante I had a while back. Is this '12 Canon a different style from the '15? The 2012 Canon was subtle, classy, elegant, still young but opening up seductively with about an hour of air. I thought the 14% alcohol was on display at the beginning, but it seemed to go into hiding as the wine evolved. Hmmm, these high end right bankers, wow, they are seductive, aren't they.... Me want more. I think I rated it 91+ the other night, and maybe that was so for the first half of dinner, but by the end I give it a solid 94.

Remember that the winemaking team changed for the 2014 vintage, so I do not see subsequent vintages tasting much like the prior. I have had 2015 and 2016, personally I prefer prior vintages, but I have not tried the 2012. I recently had a 2004 that was very elegant. It just needs a little time my friend, not as precocious as these more modern-styled vintages that we are seeing under the new regime.

I just sourced some 1982 with impeccable provenance. From the original owner. Cannot wait to try it.

1961 (at least) through 1989 was an utterly brilliant run at Canon. Of the wines I buy and drink (which includes everything except the Firsts, Palmer, LMHB, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, and a few ultra premium Pomerols), it’s a top 5 chateau for me in that era, maybe even a top 3.

Nothing I’ve had from Canon since (1990-2016) has come close for my palate.

Yes, Chateau Canon from the past are clearly sensass: the 1982, 1983 are great.

The 2015 is now updated to modern vision of Bordeaux and i guess this is not pleasing everyone, but the young generation that want everything now is not interested in Chateau Canon that you have to wait 30 years... all is different today, but i can tell you that this 2015 is something.

Ehhhh while Nicolas Audebert may have been brought on in 2014, this was still John Kolasa’s show and his swansong vintage at both Canon and Rauzan Segla and the somewhat noticeable style change began with 2015 vintage. So, more classical in style through 2014.

I’ve had the 70 Canon a few times before and the good bottles have been stellar, but I think it’s been 6 years since I’ve had one. Curious to hear how it shows, do tell once you pop it.

I see it on discount for $64, probably worth trying a few bottles.

14 is a beaut and if you don’t snap em all at that price which is about $10 more than it was on futures, let me know as I will take them.

SF Ed poured us some 1964 a while back, among a fine spectrum of offerings, that was incredibly layered, dense and complex.
