Ch Pitray 2016. A steal at $14

Post by Musigny 151 »

Not a wine on my radar usually. From Castillon. Retails for 6 Euros in Europe apparently, and $14 here.

This was completely unexpected. A traditional well made Bordeaux, a couple of years off its peak. Everything about it was slightly better than expected, the nose more complex, the balance really solid, some nice complexity with spice, red fruit and a tiny bit of herb, and a much longer than expected finish. Served open at a tasting yesterday as an aperitif before some much more revered and interesting estates such as La Mission and Ducru. It stole the show, not because it was the best wine there, but because it was so close to the eventual winners.

For $14, this is a steal. I felt I could have been tasting a young Bordeaux made in the eighties. I scored it a 91, and promptly bought a case. A perfect house wine.

Nice note Mark on an unbeknownst to me wine but see Touton has got the 2016 so will have to order some. So out of curiosity, were the DB and LMHB both 2016’s as well or … ?

Here's my CT note on the 2015. I doubt I would score it above 88 points but I certainly liked it. Will keep an eye out for the 2016.

Very nice. Pleasing fruit profile with good acidity. Minimal oak presence and smooth tannins. A dinner wine, not a cocktail wine. I would prefer this over any $20-25 California Merlot.

The other wines there included a 2003 and 2009 Gruaud Larose, a 2009 reserve de la Comtesse and the clear winner the 1993 LMHB. Another unexpectedly good wine.

While my typical Bdx purchases usually come in original wood cases, not this Golodetz value pick ;) $152/cs and $144 on 2 wholesale through Touton for this vintage which goes to show you how sharp that Rye Brook price is. Will give it this a trial run soon and we shall see how this value fares for me.

Just opened a couple of bottles. I think you will enjoy it.
The alcohol level is listed at 14.5%. I am nearly 100% sure it is much less than that, and suspect the high number may be Trump tariff related.

Bought a case on Musigny's recommendation. Very nice wine, especially for the price. Agree that the ABV is lower than labeled. Thanks for sharing.
