A gorgeous evening in Sarasota and we had friends over for a casual dinner
With some meze to start; a chopped salad, avocado cucumber salad, hummus, baba ghanouj, we opened a new one on me the 00 VGW Chardonnay, my friend served it blind and it started as a racy, sort of all over the place wine. It took a few minutes to relax and put on some depth, the wine is pale yellow, vibrant and focused, with good acidity, no discernible new oak, the fruit is a bit subtle but it has a sweetness that gives it away as new world. The finish is so so, 88 for me, others liked it much more. Give me a White Bourgogne from a decent producer at half the price instead, at $80 a bottle, I won't be fighting anyone in the aisles for a bottle.
Dinner was rack of lamb, roasted sweet potatoes and roasted green beans, and I thought a Bordeaux would work best, so we opened a bottle of the 2001 Trotanoy. Terrific nose of earth, violets, black stone fruits, the wine is inky red with no bricking, the tannins are completely gone, and this is one elegant Bordeaux that is ready and open. Fine mouthfeel, very balanced with good structure and delicious. A very typical Pomerol, it will last a long time but I doubt it will ever taste much better, then again, it tastes great now. Glad we opened it. 95

Hi Jacques,
Completely agree with you.
Here are my tasting notes of 2001 vintage from the vertical of Trotanoy in 2020 - https://www.greatbordeauxwines.com/chat ... l/trotanoy
Tasted in March 2020. I acquired this vintage together with 2004 and 2008 from a very reliable wine shop in mid-France; bottles came directly from Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix and were stored in perfect condition at this shop. Aromatic with a splendid intensity of black fruit and cherries. Sophisticated and elegant, delicious, very potent with great complexity. Silky texture. Many years to go. Delightful effort. Stand A.

I liked the 2001 Trotanoy the sole time I had it an couple of years back and do they change the name on those 00 wines if you don’t like them, 00 NVGW (‘Not Very Good White’ .
And while I have had the occasional Oregon Chardonnay that surprised like Walter Scott and Morgan Long and may have thought they were Meursault and Chablis like respectively, but at the same time, they are already pricey so what’s the point?

Food sounds very tasty Israeli. Yum!

Right? I mean what's the point? To entice White Burgundy buyers? I thought it was just correct but a bit sweet and boring. BTW, I figured New World right away, but I just didn't think it was Chardonnay.jckba wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 2:33 pm I liked the 2001 Trotanoy the sole time I had it an couple of years back and do they change the name on those 00 wines if you don’t like them, 00 NVGW (‘Not Very Good White’ .

Good to hear about the 2001 Trot Jacques
It was one of the wines that Patrick and Tom kindly shipped over for me back in March from my remaining US stash.
I was going to use one for my Bordeaux dinner on May 17 but saw the mixed reviews on Cellartracker so went for 98 Figaec instead.
I will figure out an excuse to open one soon.

Instead of paying $80 on a not so good Burgundian replica, you should go straight to your neighborhood store and clear them out of the 2015 LdH Gravonia for exactly half as much before they are all gone. BD, give this man an exemption so he can buy a couple of bottles for a fair price that will bring a smile to his face.

Actually, I can use the Stuart exemption of replacing consumed wines!
Where would we be without a daily justification?

It won't be as good a the 1998 Figeac Ian, but you'd still love it.Comte Flaneur wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 5:32 pm Good to hear about the 2001 Trot Jacques

I'll say this, I was able to taste a whole lineup of the 00 wines recently and I agreed about the 2019 VGW and also the EGW. However the 2017 was awesome and many others agreed. I would try that vintage before making an assessment. I'm guessing that either 2019 was too warm, or the wine might not be ready. The 2018 VGW was perfectly fine but round and a bit boring.
The 2019 Pinot Noir Richard Herman Cuvee was also amazing. A bit expensive at $150 ish but worth a try. The VGR not so much.

I thought Stu's exemption included replacing future consumption as well?jal wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 5:51 pmJim, pleaaase???jckba wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 5:49 pm Instead of paying $80 on a not so good Burgundian replica, you should go straight to your neighborhood store and clear them out of the 2015 LdH Gravonia for exactly half as much before they are all gone.
