TN: 2000 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Post by DavidG »

Been going through some of the California wines that have been sitting in the cellar just holding on. Not expecting a whole lot of magic in the bottle, but a nice drink.

Dark red to rim. Bright red fruits and cassis with some vegetal hints on nose. Fairly lush fruit, medium body, not as big as most Pride Reserves, retains a fair amount of tannins which mellow after a few hours of air, thins a little on the back palate and finish.

I've never had a Pride. Tried Dunn, Montelena, Ridge, Mondavi Reserve, Stag's Leap, and another...Rutherford type, can't remember.

What I've always wanted to try is the Dominus. Dunno why, maybe because when I did it was available for under triple digits.

My favorite of the Californian's I've tried, honestly, was the the 1998 Mondavi Reserve. Still have a bottle. Got horrible reviews as I recall and the county had them for like 50 bucks. It was GRAND! Just loved to smell them, red fruits and leather and tobacco and forest and flowers. Maybe not a typical Napa Cab and why the bad reviews. Always ate an aged dry rubbed rib eye steak when I drank. Maybe it was the food.

...Quite an accomplishment, when you think about it.
We almost didn't have a Napa '02, which probably would have put the kabosh to the whole thing. But we did, and it is good to keep the tradition continuing.

Dominus is more Bdx-like than Pride, but it's still a Cali Cab. I still have a few in the cellar, but haven't bought any in years.
