2009 CHATEAU CANTEMERLE - any thoughts

Post by Rick »

As the 2005 BWE WOTY I was wondering if anyone have any insight into the 2009 as a "futures" buy
thanks

This "best ever" per HWSRN at $32.97 at PJs seems like a compelling deal:

Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Medoc Pre-Arrival 2009 (750ML)
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the Cabernet dominating, looks to be the best they have ever produced, even eclipsing the 2005. Dense purple in color, with extraordinarily elegant floral notes intermixed with raspberry, black currant, cherry, and spice box, it is medium to full-bodied, not massive, but again, very seamless, with beautiful precision, sweet tannins, and an endearing fleshiness and depth of flavor that are neither heavy nor fatiguing. This wine will be relatively approachable in 3-5 years and drink well for 25-30. - WA92-94*

I can't remember whether I tasted this out of barrel, but is always good quality for the money and usually does well in hot vintages due to it's more structured, austere nature... The 03 is lovely to drink right now. I think for the money I would be inclined to say 'WINNER'.

Jim's pick of the '05 as BWE WOTY, RP's positive review, the fairly accessable drinking window, and the decent pricing got me to break my "No '09 futures" vow and pony up for the Cantemerle.

It is hard to see how you can go wrong with the '09 Cantermerle, Rick.

I've already voted with my fingers, typing in CC info for 6 half-bottles and 6 bottles of the 2009 Cantemerle.

If the 2009 indeed eclipses the 2005, then the '09 is going to be a beauty, especially for the price. I think HWSRN nails it when he says that it is "neither heavy nor fatiguing," at least in the case of the '05.
