BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
Starting the thread. Please let me know if you would like to attend as there are 2 rooms-one private and one semi private that holds more people. My plan is to arrange a set price menu with choices with an inclusive price of tax, service, and corkage.

Just me, Jay, for Friday.
Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
I think I would like to join your party, Jay, but I don't want to repeat my blunder of BWE Sonoma 2004
Is there another event going on Friday evening I did not see?
And what is the wine theme? (I'm hoping for 2005 Burgs.)

I'll second that motion. And what is the wine theme? (I'm hoping for 2005 Burgs.)
But I'll be happy with whatever is decided upon.
Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
I'll co-sponsor that bill... even if it means I have to go out and find some '05 Burgs.
Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
Burgs sound good. But should we have only '05 Burgs?

Maggie and Greg will be coming along too - they're both budding wine enthusiasts.

I'm fine with a Burgundy theme but I'm with stefan - it would be nice to include some older Burgs.

I'm with stefan too. We'll make sure we have some nice 2005s well represented, but let's bring some older Burgs as well.

Wine theme. I've been pondering this. You know me, I usually say bring something good. I would exclude Bordeaux as we will be doing that Saturday. Ok. burgs but maybe some more mature ones?, how about a few CNDPs? Also, Dino has an outstanding and I mean OUTSTANDING Italian list and it's fairly priced. So, attendees who do not wish to bring a bottle could delve into the list. Additionally, Dean is a winelover and incredibly well informed about all things Italian so one can put his/her wine choices in Dean's hands with no risk (something I've done several times). Also, as mrs vino will be in attendance, I will be bringing champagne and invite others to do so as well. Dean and I have been playing phone tag so I hope to reach him tonight and start working out the details.

Is it an Italian restaurant, Jay? Then maybe we should have Italian wines.

I have attended lots of wine dinners at Dino (with wine themes that have included Italian, Rhone, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Cal Cab and even German) and the food has worked well with the wines. Dean can be quite flexible to develop a menu to go with whatever wine theme is desired. That being said, it's probably a good idea to give him a list of wines at least a week in advance if we want him to build a menu around it. Oh, and one other thing, Dean generally has a great selection of cheeses so a cheese plate is a must.

That place we went to on Friday night in Miami for the Rhone dinner was an Italian restaurant, wasn't it?

Hi Jay,
please include me as well, as an attendee, for the Friday night dinner at Dino. Any theme is good with me.

Yes, it was Jim. Even though the CdPs and Cal cults we had last year might be a better match for most Italian dishes than Burgundy, I think we'll do just fine with young and older Burgs, perhaps with a sprinkling of Italian wines and CdPs.JimHow wrote:That place we went to on Friday night in Miami for the Rhone dinner was an Italian restaurant, wasn't it?

Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
I've yet to visit Dino's - really looking forward to it - but I've seen a fair number of posts on wine dinners held there. As Chris notes, they seem to do a really good job with a range of wines beyond Italian. I'm still advocating for a Burg theme. I haven't really drunk any red Burgs since the Bouchard dinner during BWE '05 at the Chateau de Beaune. That dinner ruined me for Burgs for a good long time. I think I'm ready now, though.

....especially since the 2005 Burgundy vintage was the controversial Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts Wine of the Year....
Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
Yeah, I've been hearing those put-up-or-shut-up rumblings, I know you're looking to silence the riff-raff Jim.
I saw a burg-related reference on TV last night: at dinner, one of the characters (in a family that owns a winery) says he's going to treat the group to a nice Cote de Nuits, and then produces a Bordeaux-shaped bottle. He must have known that a real Burg would've come up short....

Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
Ok. Here are the particulars: We can get the private room for up to 20 people at a total cost of $1800 inclusive of tax, tip, and corkage. Dean will prepare a 5 course meal (I'll throw out some of his ideas as well as what we've enjoyed on our visits) served family style that will complement our wines and will feature the best of the season. We're at 18 now and I don't think we should exceed 20 to keep the private room so room for 2 more. I told Dean I would post the particulars and make sure this is ok for everyone. I also invited Dean who has been lurking to register so he can participate and I hope he will! Feedback please. Dean agreed that Rhones and Italians would be the preferred match for his cuisine but he could also work with Burgundies.
Re: BWE Dinner-Friday April 3rd-Dino-dc dot com
Sounds like a good plan to me, Jay. It would be nice to have a private room. I'll go with the rest of the gang as to wine theme.

Sounds great! Should be a great time.
By the way, I just retuned home from a fabulous dinner tonight at Dino with former BWEer, Steve Orloff (Latin Pig). Great appetizers, pasta and cheeses. The 2007 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese from the list was outstanding and the 1979 Certan de May (Pomerol) that I brought was showing very well. I encouraged Steve to rejoin BWE.

I remember Steve... he's from Minneapolis? We drank a few good wines together back a while. Hope he starts posting here again. Say hi for me either way.

Jay,
The guest we bring is our 15 month daughter who I don't think could eat a 5 course meal yet. So there should be still 3 seats open.

I think my last post got lost in cyber space.
I would bring an '82 - Leroy - Cent Vignes 1er Cru, and a '93 burgundy, which I have to check the wine locker to see what's there.

Wow she's fifteen months already, time is just flying by.
Looking forward to seeing you and Chris and Tessa, Werner, it has been too long!
I was looking into buying her a US Savings bond but I need her social security number, I already have the wine-related gift lined up, I'll give you three guesses what it is....
