1990 Cos D'Estournel

Post by mike reff »

I decanted this wine and paired it with Osso Bucco in a red wine reduction sauce. I last has this wine about seven years ago and was very impressed at that point. Tonight however, I was less than impressed. It had a great nose of cedar and spice and that peppery aroma. The mouthfeel was nice and gave rise to a medium finish with supple yet refined and mature tannins. The fruit was still apparent, I guess I was either not in the mood, or the NYC backyard air with a temperture feel of 29 F was more for me to handle.

Too bad, as this wine has been great every time I have drunk it.

Last time I had the 1990 Cos was during a vertical back in July and I recall being impressed with it more than your TN suggests.
Even as your 85F backyard air then couldn't have been any worse than the 95F East River-infused city aromatics we had then.

I figure that this wine was flawed or improperly stored then when I bought it from Chambers in NYC back in 2004.

1990 Cos was one of those epic wines for me.
It was a wine we drank on New Years Eve, 1999, in a restaurant in Quebec City, poignant cellos bringing in the new millenium.
I found it a very exotic, volatile wine, not resembling anything I'd ever had from Bordeaux.

I've had this wine several times, most recently this past June. I am a devoted Cos lover, and i've always found the 1990 to be a beauty, even if different than some other great years, like 1982 and 1986.

The last bottle of 1990 Cos that I opened had a wonderful aroma and tasted great when I decanted it at 4 pm but was fading at 8 pm when we were drinking it at dinner.

I thought the bottle of this we had a year ago at the 1990 horizontal at Fabio's was pretty terrific, Ian, second only to the 1990 Montrose in my notes (with the Sociando, Conseillante, and Rausan Segla taking 3rd, 4th and 5th)...
