Out with 2011, in with 2012....

Post by JimHow »

I have my list of 29 goals/things-to-do in 2012 stored securely in my trusted iPhone 3GS.

It's going to be a HUGE year, particularly artistically.

Not only that, the 2009 Bordeauxs -- the last vintage before the 2010 boycott -- are going to hit the shelves!

What are your plans for New Year's Eve? What are you drinking?

We're not big into NYE parties. We're having a graduation celebration dinner for our daughter and her 4 best friends tomorrow night. NYE will be a quiet night together at home, probably a bottle of '88 Krug or Salon with take-out sushi, and fall asleep on the couch before the ball drops.

No big personal plans/resolutions for 2012 other than getting back into a regular exercise program, hopefully made more achievable by a major reduction in my travel schedule as my Presidency of the Cornea Society comes to an end. Some big changes coming for our medical practice as well.

Same here, I usually have a quiet New Year's Eve having a couple glasses of Dom with my father, hitting the sack early. I get up early on New Years Day and do six miles.

Often get together with friends, pop a few corks (nothing serious, sweet and fizzy), and watch the local fireworks display.

2004 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon perhaps...

Maybe some Lou Dumont (Tenchijin) Burgundies, but that depends on what Hong Kong has to offer on that front!!

Four of us, one teetotal, who will be cooking a gourmet dinner

On the agenda is:

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett 1999 and Karthauserhof Auslese 1995
Ponsot Clos Saint Denis 1997
L'Evangile 1989
Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie La Landonne 2001

I think that 2012 will be a very difficult year and possibly a tumultous year in Europe; but I am hopeful we can somehow muddle through

Hey Glenn, that's a pretty funny typo: Bland de Blanc. I don't know if it was intentional - I suspect not. I actually like the Schramsberg lineup, particularly the BdB and the J Schram.

we'll be on top of a mountain in West Virginia with some close friends-hopefully the bears have finally hibernated. Something from the 96 vintage for champagne and reds from the US and Europe. Pretty good year but I have some goals I need to realize next year so awayyyy we go.

Does anyone think a bottle of Bollinger Grande Année 2000 is ready? Still deciding if I should pop open tonight or keep for another year or so...

This is a wine that usually rewards cellaring and for my taste drinks even better at 10-15 years of age. OTOH, I haven't had one of the '00s, and I think it would be drinking very nicely now.

Lucie and I were scheduled to spend tonight with some good and wine drinking friends, but Lucie changed her flight back home to stay and help stefanJr and Irena to prepare for their new arrival. Lucie and I have been together for the last 40 NYEs and I did not want to stop that, so I backed out of the evening with friends and instead will Skype with Lucie, sJr, I, and Shea. I'll join them for their dinner, but am eating mine early (chicken a la Kroger, orso, organic lettuce with truffled balsamic) and drinking 2003 Chevillon NSG Les Pruliers. Robert did very well in the difficult '04 & '03 vintages, but the prices were low because of the overall bad reputations of the years. The '03 tastes of sweet red cherries seasoned with a touch of clean asphalt. Good for drinking now, I think it will develop complexity with further cellaring without losing its attractive fruit.
