2010 Burgundy Reviews.

Post by JonoB »

Just started and finished the intro to this on my blog.

I will be following up with specific looks at producers that I had tasted regularly or in depth with them slowly.

Nice intro. Thanks.

Here's an excerpt from Stephen Tanzer's review
In their aromatic complexity, energy, intensity and clarity of flavor, transparency to soil, and overall balance, the 2010s are among the most exciting red Burgundies of my professional lifetime.
This reminds me of some Parker hype on vintages....such as "this could be the best young vintage I've ever tasted in my career"...but it isn't.

Still, I'm curious to try some and will probably be buying more 2010 Burgundy than (boycott) Bordeaux.

Me too Jon!
What does Jono's report say, I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

My wife and I were in Burgundy for a couple weeks this summer and were very impressed with the 2010s we were able to taste including barrel samples at Clos de Tart, Benjamin Leroux (his own wines, not Comte Armand), and Mugnier (absolutely stunning). Very fresh with lively acidity but not lacking in ripeness, as Jono says. Look forward to the rest of your report Jono.

Anne Gros is up now... From barrel in October 2011.

Jim, basically saying that I really like the wines because they are mineral, transparent and terroir driven. The weather and conditions weren't great but because of the really low yields, the grapes were able to ripen with the amount of sunshine they got but being cool it maintained acidity. With some of my personal favourites lined up there as well. In fact I believe and hope they will age really well with their balance and acidity.

I would consider it from my palate to be a 2008+ or a 2007++, but some have compared it to 2002 (although I think that was riper and less transparent) and 2005 (which I think was deeper, darker and more brooding perhaps slightly homogenous).

Which Burgundy do you like better, Jono, 2009 or 2010?

Jim, on the whole, I prefer 2010, but I like 07 and 08 a lot.

There are some lovely 09s and they are improving now they are in bottle, but they are much richer and less terroir driven, if that makes any sense. It is a vintage that I found difficult to taste and find enjoyment in. 2010 spoke to me; 2009 slapped me around the face for even daring to come near it, except for the calmer specimens which are listed on my blog somewhere!

Yes, the Wall Street Journal reports that they are increasingly investing in gold now (before the price crashes).

Jono - did you taste any Drouhin-Laroze? or any thoughts about this producer? Seems like a large producer, but increasing quality and the volume (or past reputation) has held back pricing.

Never mind that. I'll bet DRC is pretty good in 2010.

Sigh I remember when, not that long ago, Roberto was willing to sell me his 1996 DRC Grands Echezeaux for $200 each. And I passed....

Jon,

I didn't try Drouhin-Laroze from barrel but tasted some samples in London. Whilst I don't ever see them as the best example of each climat, they are good solid quality examples at respectable prices. Elegant, traditional and showing their terroir nicely. They are somewhat outclassed in 2010, whereas they excelled in 2008, but their 2010s are good and will give pleasure in time for sure.
