TN: 1986 Ch. Meyney

Post by salilb »

Still some tannin lurking here, but it smooths out with a little while in the decanter. This is lovely to drink now, ripe red and dark fruits seasoned with tobacco, cedar and plenty of Cordier funk, finishing long and savoury. Last of a lot I bought from TCWC, wish I had more - but will have to keep my eyes out for some more old Cordiers on the market.

A lovely estate that even today represents value for money that's hard to beat.

I agree. Some didn't like the '08 Meyney but I thought it was very good.
I love the '86 Meyney.

As to be expected - the 1986 Meyney is an excellent wine. Have to open another one soon, pretty sure I have a bottle or two around here somewhere.

Lots of great Cordier wines in the 1980s. The 1982 Meyney we had at the 1982 horizontal in DC just before New Years was rich with plenty of blood and iron. As many others will attest, the 1989 Meyney is also very fine. Recent bottles of 1982, 1983, 1985 and 1986 Gruad Larose have all been outstanding. Very good results from 1982, 1983 and 1986 Talbot as well.

Out of curiosity Chris - no love for the 1985 Talbot? Just bought a couple of bottles at auction a few months ago, am waiting to check into them (as well as an 85 Rausan Segla). Had pretty high expectations, as I've really liked all the 85 Cordiers I've had...

Can't recall ever tasting the 1985 Talbot. No reason to think it wouldn't be fine stuff. Please let us know how it is when you do open a bottle. As I have said many times, Cordier was really on a hot streak in the 1980s.

The 86 Meyney has really turned the corner in the last year or so. It was always a fine wine, but my bottles have really opened up and are now probably drinking at peak.

I cannot think of a finer QPR of 80's Bordeaux than the 82, 85, 86, 88, 89, and 90 Meyney.

I'm very pleased to see your assessment of the '86 Meyney, as I have the better part of a case of these lovelies. Just wondering if you decanted the wine before drinking or just popped and poured.
