Great appetizers include
2005 Bourgogne from Dugat-Py (very dense for a Pinot,strong black cherries, nice acidity, some weed notes, but other wine are strong challengers in that appetizer time), 2008 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (BWE wine of the year, classical Medoc character, with dark berries, light green pepper, leather and more dark currants, tannic), 1998 Chateau Gazin (wow, what a nose mixed with vanilla, cookie dough, but more violets flowers and ripe dark red berries), 1985 Veuve Clicquot (still lively, very refined in mouth, nose is creamy, bread crust and yeasty) and 2006 Screaming Eagle (very nice Cab, nose closed at first, opened on light medicinal but catch on with strong cabernet berries aromas, currants, ripe cherries, light rubber. In mouth, well, probably one of the best California Cab I had, creamy but nothing heavy, concentrated fruit, dark berries, touch of licorice, concentrated ripe tannins). And this is just a start!
Have to go. 3 separate dinners tonight, many TN to come. I<m going to Winona Chief<s dinner, and we have many oustanding wines confirmed. More to come later. I<m bringing the 1970 Chateau Montrose and the 1986 Chateau Pichon Comptesse de Lalande. Wil lhave some fun.
And just for dstgolf and bacchus, I found 3 bottles of the 2000 Chateau Gruaud Larose this afternoon, at 54.99 $ a bottle... Oh Canada, terre de nos aieux...

Feeling good this morning, I paced myself fairly well last night.
My wine of the night was the 1989 Lynch Bages, followed by the 1989 Montrose. Both of those wines were obviously well stored, and they were displaying the best that they had to offer. In fact, I thought the other 89 -- Pichon Lalande -- was also stunning. That's a great wine. Kudos to the 1989s! The 1982 Pichon Lalande was immense -- the bouquet of the night and, I'm guessing, the group's wine if the night -- especially up against the 1982 LLC which while more open than in the past, was still very young. The 1955 Mouton had great character and breed, one of the more interesting wines of the night. The 1959 Montrose was amazingly youthful, a real treat to drink! And by the way, The Sucker may have been right about the 2001 Nairac... That wine may be up in the 100 point territory. What incredible richness and viscosity, stunning sweetness but not over the top like perhaps something from 2003. The food, service, and company were as usual A++. Thanks again Stuart for another legendary evening!

It was a great line up of wines and people at Lavandou's. Nic gives on his thread a much better description of the wines than I could. Having three corked bottles hardly mattered with all the great wines that showed well. I think we finished the two bottles of '82 Haut-Brion, both of which were sound, but there was no way we could drink everything. The most puzzling wine for me was one of my favorites, '86 Pichon Lalande, which seems to be now in a dumb phase after shining for years. I could not give the great Climens the attention they deserved and hope that some are left for me to taste today.
Special thanks to Chris for putting this event together. Lavandou's was a fine venue for this kind of dinner--simple but good country french food that does not interfere with the wine. Moreover, the price (460/person) was so low that I was sure that there was some mistake.
