TN : 98 LLC

Post by Nicklasss »

Last weekend, I invited some colleague for dinner. We had a good dinner.

Champagne Premier Cru Blondel : a wine brought by my invitees 9originally from Reims). Very nice, creamy, croissant crust, pears, zesty and lot of spritz. They paid that 15 euros... TN : 92.

1998 Chateau Leoville Las Cases : A very good wine. Dark color, with aromas of lead pencil, blackberries, tar, earth, prunes and old leather. In mouth, well this is just very nicely balnced. Good flavors of darkberries, earth, minerals, good acidity and ripe abundant tannin. Long. Afteraste of earthy cassis. Very good. TN : 92.

2002 Merlot Burrowing Owl : A wine from British Columbia, from dry vineyard of sand. Eucalyptus and jalapeno on the nose, with something meaty and light cherries. In mouth, same kind of flavors. Maybe a bit tertiary. Missing a bit of fruit but very good and mellowed anyhow. TN : 89.

2001 chateau Filhot : A very good bottle, full of botrytis and concetrated peaches and apricots. Balanced and long, roasted and nice acids. Greater than the previous bottle I had of that. TN : 92.

I have been impressed with the very few '98 left bank wines that I've had. I've not had LLC, but I liked Barton, Ducru (this one, I thought, was really impressive for the vintage), Malescot, Haut Brion, LMHB and a smattering of few others.

1998 Ducru, to me, is one of the wines of the vintage. Oh, Lafite was pretty good that year, too.

Oh yeah I forgot about the '98 Grand Mayne.
'98R is of course a different story.
1998 right bank is the equivalent to '96 left bank.
1998 Ducru is a left bank wine of the vintage.

I know, not fair, RB v LB... My favorite LB '98 is Lafite. Wait, that's probably not fair either...

I recall buying '98 Lafite at Premier Cru, off the shelf, when we visited in Sonoma '02, after we had driven cross country. Mr. Vino and Ben Nelson were there. Paid the exhorbitant price of $175. Epic.
