A couple of nice Margaux and a Saint-Julien; plus a Chablis

Post by Ramon_NYC »

Wines drank over the week with visiting relatives.

1985 Ch. Rausan Segla, Margaux
A throwback in style and nose. Acidity was high and gave way to a nice level of freshness. No hurry to drink remaining bottle. B+

1996 Ch. Malescot St. Exupery, Margaux
Youthful at first pour, but even then, the expressive perfumed aroma was very enticing. With glass air time, this pleasantly evolved with the ripe fruit and other elements that were well-defined and structured. Rich and a little extracted, but worked well within the good balance. A-

1964 Ch. Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien
A lean-fruited wine that, at 48 years of age, still retained a surprisingly good level of freshness in both appearance and taste. Food-friendly and with the good balance and form that nicely-aged Bordeaux always seem to exhibit. B+

2002 William Fevre Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru
A very nice mix of citrus, stony mineral and ripened fruit. Refreshing and medium-bodied with a slight note of salinity. Smooth and well balanced. A-

Nice stuff. Good to get a pre-moxed-free white burg. Fevre is great with sound bottles. I also always like the '80's Rausan Segla, though I've never tried the '85.

Where's the 96 Malescot in its development? Early maturity?

The first 30-40 minutes of the opened bottle was admittedly quite uninteresting. It was in the last couple of pours that made me take notice, and others in the table as well, about the really nice evolvement.

1985 Rausan Segla was my first ever case purchase for 175 smackers. Long gone but I have fond memories of the elegant nature and pretty bouquet of the wine.

15 bucks a bottle? Not a bad buy, Glenn. Not bad at all.
