1994 Rauzan Segla

Post by hautbrionlover »

My wife bought me a case of this, pre-release, long ago.
We had only opened a couple of bottles, the last about 6 years ago, and it hadn't overly impressed me. I decided it probably it either wasn't very good, or (more likely) just wasn't ready, so I avoided opening another one for years.
We finally opened one tonight, with steak au poivre.
Finally, the wine was fragrant, ripe, soft and ready to go.
The nose was extremely fragrant, the wine was medium-bodied on the palate, redolent of lovely sweet, cassis fruit.
Is it a great one? No. But it's a very good, enjoyable wine. Better than Parker's last review (of 15 or more years ago), of 87 or 88. (He had previously given it higher scores. I would probably give it a 90.
But given that we paid about $$27/bottle for it, and it's now quite ready to roll, I am happy to have 9 bottles left, which I will very much enjoy over the next 5 -10 years.

My greatest experience with Rausan Segla was when we were driving cross country to BWE '02 in Napa.
We stopped in Iowa on the way at Bob and Deb's house for dinner and they pulled out a 1986 Rausan Segla, among other things. Definitely a JimHow kind if wine.

Jim-
I remember the 1986. While I liked the 1994 tonight a lot, the 1986 was better.

Good news on the '94. It's always nice when patience is rewarded, especially for a wine that was a big question mark earlier in its life.

Orlandorobert and I opened this last year...I found it local for $60 so I jumped on it, as a whole, very margaux... but it did have a light green streak...overall an enjoyable claret
