2005 Joanin Becot

Post by dstgolf »

Jim got me a little concerned with his review of the 2009 being a short term drinker. Haven't had it so can't disagree but based on the 2005 I'd like to think he's off the mark. The 2005 is full bore open and ready to drink but very primary with nice ripe tannin backbone. Black ripe fruits blowing out of the glass with somewhat hot nose. Smooth, rich and ripe with lovely balance. Lots of life left in this girl and I'd bet 10+yr window ahead if not more. Loved it alot for drinking now or down the road depending on what you like more....primary beauty or aged tertiary notes. I can't see this dying anytime soon as Jim suggested on the 09 and I think this will be a wine to watch in the future. Too good not to catch someones eye and see the price rise!!

Reading between the lines, it sounds a bit... slutty. I love sluts, but they always break your heart. Thanks for the note, Danny,

Chasse,

Good analogy but I never had a slut break my heart! Always left with a smile on my face and no regrets. :D

Maybe a vintage difference? The '05s were reportedly very tannic and unapproachable when first bottled.

You may be right Danny, although 10 years is not exactly a long time.
You should try the 2009.
I'm encouraged if this property can benefit with age, it seems to be a tasty, well-made wine.
I'm going to buy more.

Costplus world market may have the 2011 for $11, $9 if one mixes 4 of anything there.

Arv,

That's an obscene price for that wine if it is anything like the 05 10+ years down the line. I paid $38cdn on release for the 05...just checked!!. I'd back up the truck and sell it to your friends for $50 and they wouldn't know any different. Relabel it as cult Cali cab and make a bundle.

I’ve not had the 2005, 2009 or the 2011 so this is entirely speculation...

2009 was a ripe, easy year where producers at all points in the quality spectrum had an opportunity to perform above their norms. 2011 was not, and it seems unlikely that a lesser producer like Joanin Becot would have the resources to create a 2011 in the same mold as their 2009.

Then again, maybe they did. Close to zero risk at $9. But it’s also possible the lower price reflects the quality. I’d try one before filling the cellar with it. It’s not a bargain unless you like it.

I can buy recent vintages, back to 2012, for between $26-$30.
So far it hasn't been on my list of wines to buy but maybe I'll give it a closer look.
I need some more choices for good wines to drink in their youth, and I've been enjoying many of the 2012s I have already.
I'm nearly done buying classified growths for ageing anyway.

I doubt 2011 is anything special, as the weather wasn't that cooperative.

I did purchase one bottle - for the aforementioned $11 price.

Honestly could not find 4 bottles of anything I would want from the store.

Well maybe some Palazzo del Torre for $12, but that's more of a wine product than a wine I suppose.

I think at one point I mentioned K&L was selling 2010 for $16, which seems like a better relative value.

The American consumer base doesn't seem to give any value to off vintage BDX.
