TN: 1992 Dominus

Post by Claret »

My last bottle of 6 purchased on release.

The nose is all about that red cherry clay soil aroma I get from mature Pomerol with a hint of cedar. The sensation goes well back into my nostrils which is always a good sign.

On the palate earthy tobacco dominates with good acidity which carries through on the long finish. Smooth in texture and probably at peak this wine should hold on for a few more years but it is delicious now. My current red WOTY.

Glenn.

1992 is a tricky year and it could be hit or miss with the California cabs. When they are on they could be wonderful as the experience you had. I recently drank a 1995 Dominus and it was rather underwhelming with subdued fruit characteristics. Could have been an off bottle, but i plan on consuming another bottle this year. Good to hear from you.

I was supposed to drink both the 92 and the 95 earlier this week with some friends, but the tasting got delayed due to the snowstorm. I'm looking forward to trying them alongside the 83, 84, 85, 86, 88 and 96...

Hi Emil. I am in Nevada now, NJ no more. I have had good luck with 92's. I only have a couple of bottles of Montelena left from the vintage. In a blind tasting I would have sworn this was a Pomerol.

Nice vertical upcoming Michael, the 87 is also a personal favorite. I have not tried any vintages post 99 and with the current pricing that is unlikely to change.

Nice bottle, Glenn! I too have had good luck with '92s, though they are gone now. Liked '91s even more...
