Identify this wine….

Post by JimHow »

A tough thing to do because you can't smell or taste it or even get a good look at it, but I will provide hints, let's see if this Robert Parker 94 pointer (no cheating by looking at his scores) can be identified through the Socratic method of induction….

Interestingly, though, only 13.5% per the back label.

The color, perhaps you can see it, is a kind of medium maroon I would say.

A Parkerized St Emilion, if it is from Bordeaux.

I retire while I am ahead.

Actually, Lucie and I are going to a tasting of John Robert Eppler's wines at the home of our friend who was in the wine business until five years ago. He sold out to Specs and signed a five year non competition agreement. I hope that this event means that he will be back ITB!

The alcohol is hidden well on the palate. At 13.5% I guess it's not really that high. Seemed to be prevalent on the nose initially but it has blown off.

I'll let you know the results Stefan. John Robert Eppler… That sounds like a Napa Valley wine.

This wine has blossomed in the last fifteen minutes into a stunner. Let's see how it does with Gulf of Maine salmon...

As I have reported here in recent days, I have really loved some very reasonably priced 2012 right bankers: Corbin, La Fleur de Bouard, Barde Haut. Throw in Haut-Bergey. Each of those wines have been under $30. This wine seems to be a notch above, although it is still early and I will reserve judgment until matched with food.

Okay so St Emilion. Judging by the color of the wine and the person drinking it I am going to guess that it is youthful and that it is a 2012, and then based off one of the choices on your 2015 wish list, I am going to go with the Clos de l'Oratoire.

Ha you guys are amazing!
You know me better than I know myself!

Very well done indeed!

Two guesses…
You guys are good.

2012 Clos de l'Oratoire…. $36 at Bassins.
94 Parker points…
I've just started into it but at the outset, it looks like it's going to be a stunner.

Well done!

I picked up 2 6packs on a JJBuckley private client offer back in January of this year for $34/btl based strictly on the rating and the fact that I like the wines from the von Neipperg stable, so I'd be interested in hearing your take on this wine.

This is not difficult. I used to score the wine first and then open the bottle and drink it. No prob.

These 2012 right bankers have been a real revelation to me.
Honestly, for a moment here I was thinking back to that '96 DRC Grands Echezeaux that Jackdaw brought to a dinner in NY back in '03.
Ready to drink it with Maine Atlantic salmon, will report back.

The wine is a stunner. I'm a little sentimental here. Believe it or not, I haven't drunk the Clos de l'Oratoire since the 1998 vintage. I had six half bottles of the '98 that I loved and that are long gone. Am I missing something here? I mean, it's very possible, I've certainly missed a lot over the years. But am I really missing on the quality of these 2012 right bankers? I think they are SO seductive! So sexy! At $26, the 2012 Barde Haut, in my humble opinion, is one of the best bargains in at least the last five years. While I was a little concerned about the alcohol in the much higher priced ($67) 2012 Larcis Ducasse, there can be no dispute that it is a wine of very impressive quality. But this 2012 Clos de l'Oratoire? Going for $35.99, right now, at basins.com? This is a NO BRAINER. I was initially concerned about the alcohol on the nose but it quickly blew off. It is only 13.5%, and it was not at all noticeable on the palate. It was mild at first on the palate but then about a half hour in, all of a sudden, it exploded with licorice, coffee, spice, and all those lovely modern St. Emilion flavors but without going over the top. Voluptuous, sexy, sensuous, but not out of control in any way. Lovely black licorice. I just ordered 6 more bottles from MacArthur's. What can I say, I think Parker nailed it at 94 points. To me, the story is 2012 right bank, and the reasonable pricing of that vintage. I wonder if 2012 + right bank is a perfect match for me. 2009 Canon la Gaffeliere and La Gaffeliere, for example, were just over the top to me. Both just too alcoholic. (I have a bottle of each in my cellar and will give them both a second chance in 15-20 years.) The 2012 right bank seems to have achieved a very lovely balance, at least for my palate, and the 2012 Clos de l'Oratoire seems to be a beautiful representation of the vintage. And at $35.99, this is a no brainer. Score: 94 enthusiastic points.

the age ability of this 2012, by the way, like the other 2012 right bankers, will be the obligatory 10-12/15 years.
It'll be interesting to see the extent to which, if at all, these wines close down.

Nice report Jim.

But the 2015 Sangre de Toro rosé would have been good too with that salmon, and maybe added chances to have two plates!

I bought the first CA Cabs I have purchased in probably ten years: 2009 Rutherford, 2010 Howell Mountain, and 2006 Reserve from JRE. The prices, even with 20% off, don't make the wines bargains for what they are when compared to Bordeaux, but they are all good representatives of their genres. They give me some CA Cabs that most collectors do not have and I will not be embarrassed serving them to people who know Napa Cabs. They might not know these good wines. That is more important for me than maximizing the QPR of the purchase.

I picked up one of those too, but have not tasted it.

Hardly ever get to drink Canon la Gaffeliere but its usually even better than Clos d'Oratoire.

It seems to me that the prices (I'm seeing) for some mid level right banks for the 15 vintage are up quite a bit.

Not sure how much of that is USD effects though.

2015 Canon La Gaffelliere would be something I'd hoped would be reasonable/fair.

Here is the note on the 2010!!! Lolol....this was when Jim didn't like parkerized right bankers!

Next the Clos de l'oratoire...AKA: the Panty Dropper

This wine is like that girl you don't want to hang with, but you call at 2:30am after a night of heavy consumption

It's right bank, it's parkerized, it's high alcohol and flashes lots of new oak

In fact, this wine should come with it's own stripper pole....Comtes von Neipperg should don each bottle with a garter

I literally was pulling out all the dollar bills that I had

Tight initially, after 45-1 hour in the decanter the slow seductive lap dance started

I have to think that this is what a young Pavie Decesse must taste like, but probably(the pavie)not quite as exotic

The nose has plenty of oak...it's like being slapped by a velvety exotic spicy cat of ninetails, it's almost electric
The flavor flushes the mouth with more of that spice, fresh cedar, tobacco, oak and then the 'u can do sidebends and sit ups, but please don't lose that butt' juicy ripe fruit.

After the song is over, your broke, you feel a little dirty, you hope nobody spotted you, but you feel somewhat satisfied

It's still bordeaux no doubt...the How's of the world would dismiss it....I'm more of a classic guy, but I have to admit, I like it....and I'll just leave it at...I'm not going to date her, but I just may call her again

oh and then we drank an '01 marques de riscal gran reserva, smooth american oak good night

Goooulet!!

A tad over the top?? Hahaha, now that's enthusiasm!!!
