What is the difference between Chateau du Tertre, Margaux and Chateau du Tertre, Vin de Bordeaux? Are they the same chateau?

It would have been useful if you had posted links to the different labels so that we could be sure we were talking about the same pair of wines but I was able to find 2 different labels on the Monsieur Touton website where the first link is the 5th growth Margaux Chateau du Tertre and the other is one by the same name but from an unbeknownst to me Bordeaux AOC. I really don't know anything more but your best bet may be to direct your question to someone at Monsieur Touton. Best of luck.

I've seen that before too, and wondered about it.

Perhaps they are related, but it would be weird, because normal businesses do not want to hurt their premium product by having it named the same way as the lower level one. For example Haut Bages Liberal bottles up both an estate wine that is a Pauillac AOC, as well as some other wine, that only gets a Haut Medoc label. Labels are sort of similar between their Haut Medoc and their deuxieme. It's all very confusing, I think.

But normally estates are very clear and show some linkage, but still maintain a distinction
  • Fugue de Nenin
    Forts de Latour
    Pensees de Lafleur
    Parde de Haut Bailly
    etc...
One reason why I think they are NOT related and it must be some legacy name issue that is allowed because they were using it first. I seem to remember reading/hearing there is some other Petrus out there too with that French legal quirk....

Hi,

"Bordeaux and its Wine" (Cocks & Féret) lists 38 chateaux with the name Tertre ("tertre" means hill).

There's one Château Le Tetre AOC Bordeaux and 4 Château du Tertre.

There are many examples of two or more chateaux having the same name, here are two that come to mind.
Clos l'Eglise (Pomerol and Cotes de Castillon)
Lagrange (St Julien and Pomerol)
Best

There must be a dozen each of Bellevue and Bel Air.

Yes, those are the two names most often cited.

There are close on 50 variations of Belair in the Féret.

The famous châteaux are, of course, very jealous of their name and sued many "petits châteaux" with names like "La Tour", "Lafitte", etc.
