2003 Duhart Milon - Good Things In The Works

Post by SteveH »

2003 Duhart Milon is a very promising young wine. The quality of the estate is becoming impressive. I suppose it required the enormous resources of the Rothschilds to tame this gigantic Pauillac property. The color is young, almost opaque purple. It's very restrained, showing mostly oak for the first few hours. Then there's a nice cassis nose with dark fruit and some earth. This needs much more time, but there's a lot of substance here. I give this three Lafite arrows.

We'll be having this, other 2003's and a few 1996s with a small BWE contingent in NYC this weekend. Hope it shows as good as, or a little more of the potential that, your note suggests. I'll definitely do a bit of splash decanting prior to the offline.

This estate is still run by the Tesserons, Steve, the son Alfred has been running the show since 1994.
Did you have Pontet-Canet or Duhart Milon?

Damn, I was just getting ready to say how happy I was to hear this, since I bought a case of the '03 P-C at the BD's urging.

I believe that we're still slated to have the 2003 Duhart M in our lineup at the NYC tasting this weekend. So the note above still applies as far as some pre-cursory decanting. i suppose it applies to all the other 2003's that's in the line-up.

Guys
I have both these wines.
Not tried the DM yet, but the 03 Pontet Canet is a terrific wine.
At a large blind tasting of 03s, I rated this and Montrose the best wines, even ahead of the (less open and giving) 1er Crus.

Steve thanks for this note. My last bottle was not as positive. I was bothered by the wood and a lack of fruit. I now realize the either the bottle or I was defective. Probably both. I have a few that I will let sleep before tasting again.
