2019 and 2020 conventions.

Post by JimHow »

Like Nic, I'm still suffering from post-convention depression. Those weekends are so much fun but they go by way too fast!

Not sure about where to go in 2019, but I personally think we should do TWO conventions in 2020 to celebrate BWE's 20th anniversary:

Washington, D.C., and Bordeaux, France!

How about a "2000 AT AGE 20" convention theme in DC!

Start planning ahead. As you all know, we usually do these conventions right around the end of March/early April.

We'll sleep on the 2019 venue until fall, like we usually do.

BD.

Can't wait for the next BWE DC! I learned this year I can't really compete with some other collections around here, but I will volunteer a left bank trio of 2000 Lynch Bages, Pichon Baron, and Leoville Poyferre for 2000 at age 20. Plus a couple of "lesser" wines like the 2000 Sociando Mallet and my last remaining 2000 Canon La Gaffeliere, if I can hold off drinking it for the next two years...that is actually a surprisingly great wine that is already drinking well with some decanting.

Love the idea of a Bordeaux trip as well. Maybe doing it fairly soon after the DC event (say mid April or early May) will help combat the post-convention depression problem, while still allowing enough of a break to avoid overlapping hangovers.

I believe Denver should be considered for any future convention. We have a number of friends in Denver now. It's a nice area. It's somewhat centered.

Bordeaux 15 was a huge success thanks mainly to the extraordinary efforts of Alex and Tim.

I would expect our next Bordeaux trip to be significantly more difficult to organise and to penetrate various estates.

It seems like the big names are taking a harder line and charging more. I heard that Cos is charging €500 per group now. I heard Pontet Canet has tightened up a lot on visits.

The numbers probably matter more too. In 2015 I think we were 18 strong, and we generally managed to be accommodated except in one instance where we had to split.

I would expect that if we have such a big group in the future we might have more such problems.

I am not suggesting another Bordeaux tour is not doable, but I am throwing out the possibility that it might be a very big logistical task, even significantly bigger than last time.

Speaking for myself (and presumably the rest of the Colorado crew), we'd be happy to host the convention in Denver next year! Just let us know.

For those with ski interests, we could time it in March so that folks could hit the slopes beforehand when there's still good snow.

Denver is a fine choice....it could be golf weather, it could be ski weather....heck, it could be both....on the same day :).

I don't even know yet if I'll attend the convention next year, i would be interested in Florida (i missed it in 2006) or Denver for a change.

I'm in my lowest down from post-convention depression today. Very bad. I feel like I'm never gonna drink wine again, never attend a BWE convention anymore as it is like "too much", i already missed the fun and the people, ... should be better in a few days.

And my Facebook brought back a picture from 2015, when I was sipping some Sauternes with stefan at Café Lavinal after Lynch Bages visit. That hurts.

Yeah this is a real post-convention funk this year Nicola.
At least the weather was a little warmer today.
And some of my 2015s arrived today... think I'll uncork one in the name of science....

We'll certainly consider Denver and Miami for 2019, we'll revisit the issue in early fall.

Altitude always makes it tough for me when tasting wine...perhaps it is just me, but nuance and aromatics are a bit muted when I am in places above 5,000 feet, especially during colder weather. However, I promise to make it regardless of venue.

If we go to Denver in late April or in May we reduce the chance of running into a blizzard. We are not constrained to March, are we?

Yeah, I would agree, if we do Denver I would think we would want to do it a little later, Patrick.
We barely dodged a blizzard in DC last week!
We'll see, we have plenty of time to think all of this through.

I love the perception of Denver as this arctic wasteland, and I suppose I should just let it continue. But. As of about a week ago Denver had received 16" of snow this Winter. Since last September. :)

Anything is possible, but I personally think having it in DC this year in March was nuts. It was near 70 in Denver. I was playing golf Friday and Saturday during the convention. :):):)

All that said, if this comes to Denver, I just assured the 100 year blizzard will strike right in the middle of it.

This elite cadre of bunnies votes for that!

But as I always suggest, I think discretionary travel is safer after Easter, especially for short trips.

It is far from now but I like the concept 2000 at Age 20 for 20th anniversary. We can also add the option to insert some 1990 at age 30 to compare with the 2000. Plenty of time to discuss about!!!

Bordeaux 2020 sound also great, Nicolas told me so much about is Bordeaux 2015 trip, I can just dream about it.

For next year, I will see the option but up to there, I will look to organize with Nicolas a "off-line" event in Montréal at the end of this summer

Montreal might work for us as well. August better than September at this point.

Probably not good for me as I have a major month long trial currently scheduled in September. With my trial schedule I can't plan this far in advance.

Only August weekend that I could open up is Aug 3-6th which is a long weekend for us. Labour Day impossible for us and all other August weekends a no go with weddings and golf tournaments filling all of the other weekends.

August is virtually always bad for us.
