Re: So what have you bought lately?
Gerry, you'll like these two 2015. At UGC, Léoville Barton was my fav Saint-Julien, and Haut-Bailly is a great 2015, very concentrated.
For my part, brought back two perfect condition bottles of 1990 Chateau Lagrange, from DC. At the actual price I paid for that great Saint-Julien (who end up second in the blind tasting at 2001 BWE convention, between 1989 Lynch Bages and 1989 Pichon Baron), i'm very satisfied.
And 1 bottle of 2012 Rauzan Ségla took the road to Maine with Jim, to drink somewhere in 2027-2030...

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Nice grabs Gerry...
The '15 Haut Bailly-hide them from yourself for awhile. Very, very nice @ UGC, Very angry out of a 375 a few nights ago. Concentrated, precise, will be beautiful, but tough to like today.
'14 DdChevalier-drinking pretty well now, and will get better with time. I opened a 750 with rib eyes a few weeks ago and it was a wonderful pairing. After dinner the finish got tighter, and tannic. I've bought a lot of this wine, I'm looking forward to the evolution. It seems like it is just going to improve.

Nic, I've always been a fan of the 90' Chateau Lagrange. After trying it I started back filling older vintages

Well done, David! You make me a bit feel better about my terrible inability to stop buying wine.
I’ve only had the 2015 Siran so far, but I was quite impressed.

2015 Canon and Rauzan Ségla are very complete wines. Good move David, for a non-buyer!

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I haven’t tasted any of these yet. My choices were based on recommendations from you guys.
I was lamenting downsizing a few months ago and having less cellar space. I'll just have to make room. The BWE Annual helped some with that. I realized how fortunate I am when I read a post over on WB today by a guy who said his wife just had a come to Jesus talk with him about the size of his cellar and their retirement plans to go full-time RVing.

In that case one can only hope that it’s an RV with a decent sized wine fridgeDavidG wrote:I realized how fortunate I am when I read a post over on WB today by a guy who said his wife just had a come to Jesus talk with him about the size of his cellar and their retirement plans to go full-time RVing.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
I’d start negotiating for a second RV dedicated solely to wine storage.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
Or perhaps even better yet, a refridgerated trailer so they can still sit together while on the road though after he sells off his wine collection maybe that kind of compromise will be off the tableDavidG wrote:I’d start negotiating for a second RV dedicated solely to wine storage.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
After the last move a little over a year ago, I told Kim that we could not do that again as long as the cellar remained more than a few hundred bottles. My plan is the cellar is big enough as is to get me to retirement (unless the convention is in Denver next year), all I have to do is stop buying more.

FAMOUS LAST WORDSBlanquito wrote:all I have to do is stop buying more.
So I just bought two bottles of the 2015 "Hauts de Smith" SHL white wine. Inspired by the 2014 at the Thursday dinner (2014 is no longer generally available). $30 in stock at Sokolin.
I am going to pick up a few bottles of Foillard Cote de Py and then my current buying wave is over.
Total red Bordeaux-related damage (cringe) is:
a half a case of 2009 Leoville Barton
4 bottles 2003 Cos d'Estournel
4 bottles 2012 Rauzan Segla (birth year)
4 bottles 2014 Leoville Barton
4 bottles 2014 GPL
3 bottles 2014 Pichon Lalande
3 bottles 2014 Cos d'Estournel
3 bottles 2014 Domaine de Chevalier
4 bottles 2016 Leoville Barton
3 bottles 2016 Pichon Baron
Now I am set for the decade of my 60s. Seeing all the folks at BWE DC made me want to plan for the eventuality of reaching that age. I am starting to find I tend to like Bordeaux best from 20-25 years old.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
If you want to try a bottle of the Canon when you pick it up I could contribute a bottle of the 2005 Canon to pair with it. Of course both bottles are probably vinfanticide to drink so I can't in good conscience recommend it.DavidG wrote:I haven’t tasted any of these yet. Those Canons deserve to be allowed to mature. Come on David you just need to put off the elevator in your condo.
Is it my imagination or is French wine becoming more expensive.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
LOL. I’ll just put a bed in the basement next to the wine cabinets.
There are still plenty of good QPRs in France and Bordeaux but the top stuff has definitely increased in price way more than inflation.
I’ve got a few 2005 right bankers to match a 2005 Canon, or something from 1995 which will be a lot closer to mature.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I suspect part of the price issue is the slide of the dollar against the Euro. Since we are traveling soon to France, I checked today, and the Euro = $1.26! The price of this vacation is on the rise. On top of that, ongoing rail strikes that could impact planned travel.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
The foreign exchange rate plays a role for sure Jon. But I’m talking about wines like Canon and Pavie and Angelus being over $300 and first growths being over $600. That’s more than inflation and exchange rates alone would explain compared to the 1980s and 1990s when I was regularly buying those level wines. The escalation is related to supply and demand in the age of universal information and the internet.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I just suggested the Canon because I saw I had some earlier vintages in case you wanted to make a vertical. Not wed to 2005 at all, frankly the 2005s are still too young right now. Got any number of other options to open, let's connect close to the day to figure out what.DavidG wrote: I’ve got a few 2005 right bankers to match a 2005 Canon, or something from 1995 which will be a lot closer to mature.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
For drinking in LA:
3 2001 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru "Teurons"
2 2008 Louise Brison "Cuvée Tendresse" Brut Blanc de Blanc
1 1989 Suduiraut Crème de Tête, Sauternes (375)
1 1997 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Mostly for at home from a St. Innocent Library Sale:
1 97 St. Innocent Temperance Hill
1 00 St. Innocent Brickhouse
Two each of the following Pinot Noirs
96 St. Innocent Freedom Hill
96 St. Innocent Brickhouse
98 St. Innocent 7 Springs
99 St. Innocent Brickhouse
00 St. Innocent 7 Springs
01 St. Innocent Anden
05 St. Innocent 7 Springs Special Selection
05 St. Innocent White Rose
and three each of
03 St. Innocent 7 Springs
04 St. Innocent 7 Springs
I have now purchased 19 bottles for pickup at K&L Hollywood and can take 19 more bottles on the plane. Lucie and I will be in LA 40 days and 40 nights, so I still have a way to go, especially since we'll have visitors from time to time at the Beverly Hills residence we got through Airbnb. If I buy too much it does not matter because I can take up to 19 bottles on the return trip.
I was happy that Mark did a Library sale because the first vintage of SIs that we bought was the 2005. I was sorry that he did not have enough of the fabulous 2002s to put some on the list, but, fortunately, stefanJr and one of his colleagues still have some.
BTW: For anyone not in the SI wine club, next week SI will open the Library sale to all comers.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
Yes, indeed, Glenn. I neglected to buy the 05 7 Springs SS and was glad to get a second chance. The regular bottling is great, so I have high expectations for the SS. I love the 05 White Rose--it is maybe my favorite 05--but had already consumed the few I bought on release. I have drunk the 03 and 04 7 Springs courtesy of stefanJr, but this is the first chance I have had to purchase them from SI. Of the younger wines I have either never drunk or have drunk one time.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
00 Seven Springs several years ago was very good on a light frame. 05 SS is a winner, shared one with William P. and Linda last year. I missed out on all the White Rose...

Hello is anybody there?
La Lagune 2016 six pack £200 for six before tax. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me.

Thanks for the reminder, Ian.
Re: So what have you bought lately?
At under $50/per btl converted I would tend to agree, nicely done. What do taxes on wine run across the pond out of curiousity?
Had several LE bourbons sell through on consignment and decided to use those funds on a case purchase of the 2014 Beychevelle, and if you total the purchase costs of the bourbons which sold, the Beychevelle ending up costing me just under $36/btl

Re: So what have you bought lately?
JC we pay £25 a 12 pack case duty and value added tax at 20%. So if I took that out I would pay (£200 + 25/2) x 1.2 ex delivery. So that is £255, which is £42.50 all in, or $60 at current exchange rates (my hasn’t the dollar weakened some)

1x 2000 Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste for an upcoming 2000 Bordeaux offline in W. Hartford, CT
2x 2014 La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou - so far I've bought 8 of these and drank one. I'll probably buy a couple more and drink one more in the near term.
2x 2012 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Le Petit - on sale at Total Wine this month, I drank one from my cellar and decided it was good enough to buy a couple more.

4x 2015 Chateau Cantemerle, 375ml - a tasting note on Cellartracker prompted me to get some of these. If I like it enough I may get a few 750s as well, from a retailer in upstate NY.
1x 2014 Chateau de Chantegrive Cuvee Caroline
1x 2011 Lagier Meredith Syrah (Mt Veeder) - the winemaker is a customer of mine. Awesome deal at $28.99
