Re: Elin McCoy shilling 2018 again
I have to post this part. It's excellent advice:
"To win at this game, you have to pick the right wines, meaning ones whose prices are low enough, are made in tiny quantities or for which there’s hot demand. In the last very good vintage, 2016, the wines providing the best returns, for example, include Les Carmes Haut Brion and Lafleur (both up 109 percent from their release prices) and Petrus (up 64 percent), according to Wine Lister’s 2018 Bordeaux Study."

So here are her top 10:
Lafite
Lafleur
Petrus
Vieux Chateau Cretan
Figeac
Pichon Lalande
Rauzan Segla
Léoville Las Cases
Palmer
Les Carmes Haut Brion
In addition, she highlights:
Mouton
Cheval Blanc
Ausone
Le Pin
Latour
Pichon Baron
Léoville Barton
Montrose
Cos d'Estournel
Troplong Mondot
Trotanoy
Angelus
So 22 top performers worthy of investment. Not many surprises. She says it’s a variable year. I give her credit for publishing a short list of underperformers to avoid, though none were wines that were ever likely en primeur buys for me.
Angelus is the only one that’s been offered so far, with $345 the second to lowest price on WS. Might be interesting to gather the other en primeur prices as they appear and compare them to offers in 2021 when the wines are available for delivery. Any bets on whether the returns will beat a savings account (pretty low bar), or any of the major stock indices between now and then?

Re: Elin McCoy shilling 2018 again
My goodness - I could have come up with that list without tasting any of the wines (and in almost every other vintage!)
And she doesn't know that Latour won't be available for years?

Ha that does seem like a pretty conscientiousness flop!Tom In DC wrote: And she doesn't know that Latour won't be available for years?

Seems like Tour Saint-Christophe made it again in 2018! A future BWE WOTY?

The people reading - and maybe actioning - her counsel are a bunch of 29 year old credit derivs traders who might be clever at pricing things but generally on the wrong side of fads and value.
She's always been one of the saddest shills in the wine rags biz I've felt.

In general wine is not a great investment and people assuring you it is are usually directly profiting from the sell side.
Sure you can retrospectively come up with a list of wines that give an impressive return based on retail prices. But that is cheating and even for those wines, taking out transaction and storage costs of 20% plus makes returns less amazing

Re: Elin McCoy shilling 2018 again
I actually visited Larmande during the harvest in October 2018 (towards the end of it) and couldn't taste any overripeness in grapes.
Barrel sample tasted at the property during UGCB tasting in April 2019 didn't indicate at all overripeness and other bad things, on the contrary it tasted really splendid. Same winemaker at Larmande as at Soutard, Veronique Corporandy. Seems like old/bad barrel sample to me Elin McCoy had tasted.
The wines she mention for investements are also in my top wines list of the 2018 vintage with very few exceptions.
