The 2016 vintage does it again

Note Meyney

Question is which is the greatest vintage of all time (note the adjective ‘modern’ is superfluous)? 2016 or 2010?

Very interesting read. It is clear that 2016 is one of the best recent vintage. In term of homogeneity, it reminds me more 2005 than 2010. Even the small Bordeaux are excellent in 2016, with kinda the same qualitities as the higher reputation wines. For me, the small Bordeaux from 2010 are very good, but not like the 2005 or 2016.

Anyway, we'll talk about these three vintages for a long long time.

I bought 4 of the '16 Meyney last year and opened one in November.
I posted this short note at the time:
11/3/2019  Rich fruit, cassis and plum, with appropriate acidity. Moderate tannin level. Medium length finish. (92 pts.)

Thanks for the link. I’ve tried to stay out of this and subsequent vintages given my ripe old age of 54 and me liking wine with some years on it. The 2014 vintage was my last deep purchase. However, those that I have bought and tried, have been damn impressive, exactly as the writing indicates. Canon, for examples, was shockingly fresh, so much better than its more highly-acclaimed 2015 version. I have bought Canon, Sociando, Lagrange, Grand Puy Ducasse and Chasse Spleen. The only rhyme or reason for these purchases have been emailer offers and 375s from my local retailer. No concerted effort. I am tempted to grab some, including VCC and Figeac.

My problem is the opposite. I am 56 and don’t have enough 2014s but bought heavily into 2016, and even though prices haven’t moved I don’t regret it because as the article notes the 16s should be approachable at a younger age than the other great vintages they compare with 16. They might be broachable aged 10-15.

I have more 2016 Bordeaux than any other vintage barring 1996: Beychevelle, Brane Cantenac, Cantemerle, Clerc Milon, Conseillante, Figeac, Gruaud-Larose, Haut-Bailly, La Lagune, Lagrange, Leoville-Barton, both Pichons, Smith Haut-Lafitte and Sociando Mallet.

I look forward to trying La Tour StChristophe on tour, but the one otherwise top of mind is GPL.

What a performance by the 2016 Meyney. I had the 2014 that is glorious.

No mention of 2016 Lafite...

And I'm impressed that 4 Pomerol made it in the top 6.

He is the chairman of Farr Vintners the UK’s leading wholesale wine merchant and one of the world’s largest, which has been in operation since 1978. While it has many competitors it is the go to place in the UK and always has an extensive range.

In February they will be doing their tenth anniversary tasting of 2010 Bordeaux in the same blog page, with the usual guest list including Neal Martin, Jancis and other luminaries of the UK fine wine establishment. Will be interesting to see how it stacks up against 2016.

Thanks Ian. I find Farr's Southwold tasting to be very informative. For those who don't follow it, it's a tasting with many noted guests of the wine world and they taste the vintage that is four years old. So this year they tasted 2016. There are always interesting observations. Last year was the 2015 Meyney.

The 2016 Sociando and Chasse Spleen have been superb.
I'm glad I have a case of Meyney which I got for $27 en futuro from Zachy's.

I have 7 bottles of Ch Meyney and am tempted to grab a case in NH before the sale ends for $33/btl. I've been on the wagon so far this year not buying any wines for the cellar. I held it together avoiding buying any more 08' Dom but this is one more temptation.

That is a great read/link. I love that they taste everything blind.
